VMware vSphere 5.1 Clustering Deepdive available at VMworld!

Duncan Epping · Aug 27, 2012 ·

Frank and I had been talking about this for a couple of months, but without mentioning what it was we were working on. The last couple of months we’ve spent our spare time on updating the 5.0 Clustering Deepdive to 5.1.

Although this “just” an update to 5.1, we’ve added a section about stretched clustering to the book and the Storage DRS section has been completely overhauled.  Several new paragraphs were added to the vSphere HA section and we had to do some minor tweaks to the vSphere DRS section. On top of we added a great foreword by Raghu Raghuram!

In the upcoming week the book will be available on Amazon (paper – kindle) and in the Apple iBooks store. As we needed to be careful with publishing it at a certain time/date in some cases it might take a couple of days before it shows up in your “local” online bookstore. If you really can’t wait, it is available now on Createspace.

Again, we have kept the prices low… The e-book will sell for only $ 7.49 (note a surcharge might be added based on location) and the paper copies sells for $ 24.95. It is a bargain if I say so myself. Note that even the paper copy will be available directly from European Amazon stores and so will the ebook.

For those at VMworld, there are copies available at the VMworld store on Tuesday, or maybe even Monday afternoon. Note that there is a limited amount available… if you want a copy I would recommend picking it up soon! If you see Frank or myself walking around and would love to have your book signed, don’t hesitate it is our pleasure! We had the honor of presenting the book to Carl Eschenbach yesterday, I can tell you Carl was thrilled and so are we… P i c k i t u p!

VMware R&D Innovation Lounge at #VMworld!

Duncan Epping · Aug 23, 2012 ·

If I needed to pick one thing that I am really excited about at VMworld this year (besides #notsupported) then it probably is the R&D Innovation Lounge. You might wonder why, well a couple of months back I had the pleasure of attending our internal R&D innovations event and was blown away by some of the amazing ideas / research projects. Now a mini version of this will be held at VMworld…

What? Yes a mini-version of it will be held at VMworld! (Booth 1730) This means that you can get an insight into some of the awesome projects happening within VMware at the moment, these are called Posters at the Innovation lounge. Just to give a couple of examples of why I am excited about these posters (full list here):

  • A Social-Media Approach to Virtualization Management.
I visited this poster at our research event and witness Ravi Soundararajan pitching it, believe me when I say this guy is a rock star! Not only is the concept brilliant he also knows how to sell it! I won’t reveal anything though… visit the booth!
  • Location Aware Calendaring for Zimbra.
Melina McLarty presented this poster, and the brilliance of this idea is that is a problem many of us face on a daily basis. Don’t understand why it isn’t part of every calendaring solution yet, again not revealing anything about the poster… just go and see!
  • Automated Policy-driven Placement in the Cloud
This is one which will make your brain hurt. I saw Pradeep and Ajay presenting it… yes this is hardcore deepdive research on resource management that even has Frank Denneman flabbergasted for hours 🙂

Also make sure to attend the spotlight session about Innovation at VMware:

SS1022 – From Ideas to Reality – A Closer Look Inside VMware Innovation
10:30am – 11:30am

This session will be hosted Julia Austin (@austinfish). Does she have the coolest job at VMware or what… VP Innovation. Julia will be accompanied by some of VMware’s top engineers. Believe me when I say, worth attending!

Meet the Experts at VMworld!

Duncan Epping · Aug 17, 2012 ·

This year at VMworld there is again the opportunity to meet some of the leading VMware / vCloud experts. Several people have asked me how this “Meet the Experts” works so I figured I would write a short article about it. If you are interested in having a 30 minute conversation make sure to reserve your slot at the Lounge reception desk, Moscone West, Level 2. You can schedule these slots on: Sunday 11am – 6pm, Monday 7am – 7pm,  Tuesday 7am – 6pm, Wednesday 7am – 5:30pm and Thursday, August 30 – 8am-3pm.

Here is my schedule. I suggest you sign up as soon as you can as there are only 4 slots available in total.

  • Monday 12:00 – 13:00 –  EXPERTS02 – Meet the Experts – 02
  • Wednesday 12:30 – 13:30 –  EXPERTS13 – Meet The Experts – 13

A full list of Expert can be found on the VMworld.com website under “meet the experts”. You will find well known bloggers like Cormac Hogan and Alan Renouf there… but also engineers like Keith Farkas (vSphere HA) and product managers like Vijay Ramachandran (Storage).

So make sure to grab your spot while you still can and sit down with the expert for a chat!

I highly recommend bookmarking his website / adding him to your RSS feed, knowing Cormac he is going to crank out a lot of material. First article is a great one: Nimble Storage 2.0 Architecture Updates. Make sure to read it.
