I just noticed this great whitepaper on the Distributed Switch(vDS) and thought it might also be useful for you guys:
http://vmware.com/files/pdf/vsphere-vnetwork-ds-migration-configuration-wp.pdf
This guide is intended to help users understand the various scenarios and considerations for migration to the vNetwork Distributed Switch (vDS). It also includes a step-by-step guide on migration from a Standard Switch environment to a vDS environment.
Great guide but it talks about:
-Ingress Traffic Shaping governs the flow from the VM or virtual port to the vSwitch (vDS).
-Egress Traffic Shaping governs the flow from the vSwitch (vDS) to the VM or virtual port.
In the VMware vSphere 4 Evaluator’s Guide the definition is just the other way around. Which one is right ?
I dropped the network team this question. I would say
ingress = enter VM
egress = leave VM
but it depends from what stance you are looking at traffic shaping.
Good Article… Thanks for posting Duncan!
Just verified it:
ingress means from VM to switch (Outbound)
egress means from switch to VM (Inbound)
Hi Duncan,
It appears that the link to the original white paper is broken:
