VMware vCloud API Preview!

Duncan Epping · Aug 31, 2009 ·

Every year a day before VMworld announcements start to appear online and of course it also happened this year. VMware just released the preview version of the VMware vCloud API.

Source
The vCloud API is an interface for providing and consuming virtual resources from the cloud. It enables deploying and managing virtualized workloads in internal and external clouds. The vCloud API allows for upload and download of vApps along with their instantiation, deployment and operation.

  • RESTful with full programmatic control
  • OVF standards based
  • Platform independent
  • Pure virtual
  • Supports multi-tenancy

Version: Technology Preview (ver 0.8)

Target Platform: Platform independent

Keep in mind it is still a technology preview, alpha version of the API, but if you are building an internal or external cloud it’s definitely worth looking into. There’s a FAQ available here and there’s a forum on VMTN to be found here.

VMworld Europe update!

Duncan Epping · Aug 26, 2009 ·

As a VMware employee I was not allowed to talk about this but Eric Sloof just posted it so I guess it’s okay for me to do so as well:

VMworld 2010
August 30 – September 2
Moscone Center, San Francisc

VMworld Europe 2010
October 11 – 14
Bella Centre, Copenhagen

Via @vnagornyi #VMworld 2009 Conference Program Guide http://twurl.nl/2r6p8e

Last page: VMworld 2010 US 8/30-9/02 in SF, Europe 10/11-10/14 in Copenhagen

Yihaaaaaaa, a different location for VMworld Europe! It’s not that I did not like Cannes, but Copenhagen is definitely more appealing!

Upcoming two weeks…

Duncan Epping · Aug 24, 2009 ·

I will be really busy the upcoming two weeks so I don’t know if and when I will be blogging. Tomorrow I will be flying to San Francisco. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday I will be in VMware HQ – Palo Alto. Some of you reading this probably know why, VCDX Defense Panels. So if you’re scheduled for this week maybe we will run into each other. Of course the week after I’ve got VMworld on my schedule, two “Ask the experts sessions”, booth duty and the VMworld Run the Golden Gate Bridge event.

For those who don’t know me, it’s probably time to reveal my “secret identity”. Although my avatar might have gotten you confused I really don’t look like  “yellow bricks”, or at least I hope I don’t. If you see me walking around don’t forget to say hi! Or come over to the Community / Bloggers booth as that will most likely be my home base during VMworld.

VMworld Run the Golden Gate Bridge 2009, be there!

Duncan Epping · Aug 19, 2009 ·

We just opened up registrations for the VMworld Run The Golden Gate Bridge 2009 event! Several options have been discussed and basically they were pros and cons to every single time-slot/date we proposed and we decided to go with two categories and an evening event instead of an early event. Not only will you get to see beautiful parts of San Francisco and of course the Golden Gate Bridge, you will also help the “Save The Bay” organization by participating.

The VMworld 2009 Portrait Project

Duncan Epping · Aug 18, 2009 ·

Greg Lato, one of my VMware colleagues, announced an interesting project today. Greg is a, as he states on his photography website, self-taught photographer and loves photographing basically anything. As thousands of people will be attending VMworld Greg thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to do several portrait shoots.

I think it’s a great initiative and anyone who would like to have, or needs(that’s you mr Boche), his picture taking make sure to visits Greg’s article and leave a comment. It’s free of charge by the way, so you will only be investing a couple of minutes of your time.

Recently I have been wondering if there may be more ways to cross the streams between my day job and my photographic passion. This originally started with me photographing the vSphere launch event back in April. Recently I come upon a way to extend this to VMworld 2009 while also engaging more directly with my readers.

On Friday I was walking from the San Francisco VMware office to the the garage where I parked my car and ended up walking past the Moscone Center. As I walked by my mind was in a photography mode and I started noticing how many great locations there are at Moscone for taking portrait photos (something I have been working on lately with my photography, including location lighting techniques). And guess what, there will be thousands of people coming here for VMworld 2009. Perhaps there might be a few people who either need or would like to have a new portrait photo taken in this great location? Like some virtualization bloggers who haven’t put a photo up on their sites yet to better connect with their readers. Or some of the social media users who would like to update their online avatar. Maybe just some attendees who are just looking for a different kind of memorabilia from VMworld.
