Part 2: Is VSA the future of Software Defined Storage? (Customer use case)

About 6.5 years ago I wrote this blog post around the future of Software-Defined Storage and if the VSA (virtual storage appliance) is the future for it. Last week at VMworld a customer reminded me of this article. Not because they read the article and pointed me back at it, but because they implemented what I described in this post, almost to the letter.

This customer had an interesting implementation, which kind of resembles the diagram I added to the blog post, note I added a part to the diagram which I originally left out but had mentioned in the blog (yes that is why the diagram looks like it is ancient… it is):

I want to share with you what the customer is doing because there are still plenty of customers that do not realize that this is supported. Note that this is supported by both vSAN as well as VMware Cloud Foundation, providing you a future proof, scalable, and flexible full-stack HCI architecture which does not need to be implemented in a rip and replace approach!

This customer basically leverages almost all functionality of our Software-Defined Storage offering. They have vSAN with locally attached storage devices (all NVMe) for certain workloads. They have storage arrays with vVols enabled for particular workloads. They have a VAIO Filter Driver which they use for replication. They also heavily rely on our APIs for monitoring and reporting, and as you can imagine they are a big believer in Policy-Based Management, as that is what helps them with placing workloads on a particular type of storage.

Now you may ask yourself, why on earth would they have vSAN and vVols sitting next to each other? Well, they had a significant investment in storage already, the storage solution was fully vVols capable and when they started using vSAN for certain projects they simply fell in love with Storage Policy-Based Management and decided to get it enabled for their storage systems as well. Even though the plan is to go all-in on vSAN over time, the interesting part here, in my opinion, is the “openness” of the platform. Want to go all-in on vSAN? Go ahead! Want to have traditional storage next to HCI? Go ahead! Want to use software-based data services? Go ahead! You can mix and match, and it is fully supported.

Anyway, just wanted to share that bit, and figured it would also be fun to bring up this 6.5 years old article again. One more thing, I think it is also good to realize how long these transitions tend to take. If you would have asked me in 2013 when we would see customers using this approach my guess would have been 2-3 years. Almost 6.5 years later we are starting to see this being seriously looked at. Of course, platforms have to mature, but also customers have to get comfortable with the idea. Change simply takes a lot of time.

VMworld Reveals: Disaster Recovery / Business Continuity enhancements! (#HCI2894BU and #HBI3109BU)

At VMworld, various cool new technologies were previewed. In this series of articles, I will write about some of those previewed technologies. Unfortunately, I can’t cover them all as there are simply too many. This article is about enhancements in the business continuity/disaster recovery space. There were 2 sessions where futures were discussed, namely HCI2894BU and HBI3109BU. Please note that this is a brief summary of those sessions, and these are discussing a Technical Preview, these features/products may never be released, and these previews do not represent a commitment of any kind, and this feature (or it’s functionality) is subject to change. Now let’s dive into it, what can you expect for disaster recovery in the future?

The first session I watched was HCI2894BU, this was all about Site Recovery Manager. I think the most interesting part is the future support for Virtual Volumes (vVols) for Site Recovery Manager. It may sound like something simple, but it isn’t. When the version of SRM ships that supports vVols keep in mind that your vVol capable storage system also needs to support it. At day 1 HPe Nimble, HPe 3PAR and Pure Storage will support it and Dell EMC and NetApp are actively working on support. The requirements are that the storage system needs to be vVols 2.0 compliant and support VASA 3.0. Before they dove into the vVols implementation, some history was shared and the current implementation. I found it interesting to know that SRM has over 25.000 customers and has protected more than 3.000.000 workloads over the last decade.

New white paper available: vSphere APIs for I/O Filtering (VAIO)

Over the past couple of weeks Cormac Hogan and I have been updating various Core Storage white papers which had not been touched in a while for different reasons. We were starting to see more and more requests come in for update content and as both of used to be responsible for this at some point in the past we figured we would update the papers and then hand them over to technical marketing for “maintenance” updates in the future.

You can expect a whole series of papers in the upcoming weeks on storagehub.vmware.com and the first one was just published. It is on the topic of the vSphere APIs for I/O Filtering and provides an overview of what it is, where it sits in the I/O path and how you can benefit from it. vSphere 6.5 what’s new – VVols

Well I guess I can keep this one short, what is new for VVols? Replication. Yes, that is right… finally if you ask me. This is something I know many of my customers have been waiting for. I’ve seen various customers deploy VVols in production, but many were holding off because of the lack of support for Replication and with vSphere 6.5 that has just been introduced. Note that alongside with new VVol capabilities we have also introduced VASA 3.0. VASA 3.0 provides Policy Components in the SPBM UI which allows you to combine for instance a VVol policy with a VAIO Filter based solution like VMCrypt / Encryption or for instance Replication or Caching from a third party vendor.

When it comes to replication I think it is good to know that there will be Day 0 support from both Nimble and HPE 3PAR. More vendors can be expected soon. Not only is replication per object supported, but also replication groups. Replication groups can be viewed as consistency groups, but also a unit of granularity for failover. By default each VM will be in its own replication group, but if you need some form of consistency or would like a group of VMs always to failover at the same time then they can be lumped together through using the replication group option.

There is a full set of APIs available by the way, and I would expect most storage vendors to provide some tooling around their specific implementation. Note that through the API you will for instance be able to “failover” or do a “test failover” and even reverse replication if and when desired. Also, this release will come with a set of new PowerCLI cmdlets which will also allow you to failover and reverse replication, I can’t remember having seen the test failover cmdlet but as it is also possible through the API that should not be rocket science for those who need this functionality. Soon I will have some more stuff to share with regards to scripting DR scenarios…

VMworld 2015: vSphere APIs for IO Filtering update

I suspect that the majority of blogs this week will all be about Virtual SAN, Cloud Native Apps and EVO. If you ask me then the vSphere APIs for IO Filtering announcements are just as important. I’ve written about VAIO before, in a way, and it was first released in vSphere 6.0 and opened to a select group of partners. For those who don’t know what it is, lets recap, the vSphere APIs for IO Filtering is a framework which enables VMware partners to develop data services for vSphere in a fully supported fashion. VMware worked closely with EMC and Sandisk during the design and development phase to ensure that VAIO would deliver what partners would require it to deliver.

These data services can be applied to on a VM or VMDK granular level and can be literally anything by simply attaching a policy to your VM or VMDK. In this first official release however you will see two key use cases for VAIO though:

  1. Caching
  2. Replication

The great thing about VAIO if you ask me is that it is an ESXi user space level API, which over time will make it possible for all the various data services providers (like Atlantis, Infinio etc) who now have a “virtual appliance” based solution to move in to ESXi and simplify their customers environment by removing that additional layer. (To be technically accurate, VAIO APIs are all user level APIs, the filters are all running in user space, only a part of the VAIO framework runs inside the kernel itself.) On top of that, as it is implemented on the “right” layer it will be supported for VMFS (FC/iSCSI/FCoE etc), NFS, VVols and VSAN based infrastructures. The below diagram shows where it sits.

VAIO software services are implemented before the IO is directed to any physical device and does not interfere with normal disk IO. In order to use VAIO you will need to use vSphere 6.0 Update 1. On top of that of course you will need to procure a solution from one of the VMware partners who are certified for it, VMware provides the framework – partners provide the data services!

As far as I know the first two to market will be EMC and Sandisk. Other partners who are working on VAIO based solutions and you can expect to see release something are Actifio, Primaryio, Samsung, HGST and more. I am hoping to be able to catch up with one or two of them this week or over the course of the next week so I can discuss it a bit more in detail.
