All-Flash Stretched vSAN Cluster and VM/Host Rules

I had a question last week about the need for DRS Rules or also known as VM/Host Rules in an All-Flash Stretched vSAN Infrastructure. In a vSAN Stretched Cluster, there is read locality implemented. The read locality functionality, in this case, ensures that: reads will always come from the local fault domain.

This means that in the case of a stretched environment, the reads will not have to traverse the network. As the maximum latency is 5ms, this avoids a potential performance hit of 5ms for reads. The additional benefit is also that in a hybrid configuration we avoid needing to re-warm the cache. For the (read) cache re-warming issue we recommend our customers to implement VM/Host Rules. These rules ensure that VMs always run on the same set of hosts, in a normal healthy situation. (This is explained on storagehub here.)

What about an All-Flash cluster, do you still need to implement these rules? The answer to that is: it depends. You don’t need to implement it for “read cache” issues, as in an all-flash cluster there is no read cache. Could you run without those rules? Yes, you can, but if you have DRS enabled this also means that DRS freely moves VMs around, potentially every 5 minutes. This also means that you will have vMotion traffic consuming the inter-site links, and considering how resource hungry vMotion can be, you need to ask yourself if cross-site load balancing adds anything, what the risk is, what the reward is? Personally, I would prefer to load balance within a site, and only go across the link when doing site maintenance, but you may have a different view or set of requirements. If so, then it is good to know that vSAN and vSphere support this.

Unbalanced Stretched vSAN Cluster

I had this question a couple of times the past month so I figured I would write a quick post. The question that was asked is: Can I have an unbalanced stretched cluster? In other words: Can I have 6 hosts in Site A and 4 hosts in site B when using vSAN Stretched Cluster functionality? Some may refer to this as asymmetric or uneven. Either way, the number of hosts in the two locations differ.

Is this supported? In short: Yes.

The longer answer: Yes you can do this, this is fully supported but you will need to keep your selected PFTT (Primary Failures To Tolerate), SFTT (Secondary Failures To Tolerate) and FTM (Failure Tolerance Method) in to account. If PFTT=1 and SFTT=2 and FTM=Erasure Coding (RAID5/6) then the minimum number of hosts per site is 6. You could however have 10 hosts in Site A while having 6 hosts in Site B.

Some may wonder why anyone would want this, well you can imagine you are running workloads which do not need to be recovered in the case of a full site failure. If that is the case you could stick these to 1 site. (You can set PFTT=0 and SFTT=1, which would result in this scenario for that particular VM.)

That is the power of Policy Based Management and vSAN, extremely flexibility and on a per VM/VMDK basis!

Two host stretched vSAN cluster with Standard license?

I was asked today if it was possible to create a 2 host stretched cluster using a vSAN Standard license or a ROBO Standard license. First of all, from a licensing point of view the EULA states you are allowed to do this with a Standard license:

A Cluster containing exactly two Servers, commonly referred to as a 2-node Cluster, can be deployed as a Stretched Cluster. Clusters with three or more Servers are not allowed to be deployed as a Stretched Cluster, and the use of the Software in these Clusters is limited to using only a physical Server or a group of physical Servers as Fault Domains.

I figured I would give it a go in my lab. Exec summary: worked like a charm!

Loaded up the ROBO license:

Go to the Fault Domains & Stretched Cluster section under “Virtual SAN” and click Configure. And one host to “preferred” and one to “secondary” fault domain:

Select the Witness host:

Select the witness disks for the vSAN cluster:

Click Finish:

And then the 2-node stretched cluster is formed using a Standard or ROBO license:

Of course I tried the same with 3 hosts, which failed as my license does not allow me to create a stretched cluster larger than 1+1+1. And even if it would succeed, the EULA clearly states that you are not allowed to do so, you need Enterprise licenses for that.

There you have it. Two host stretched using vSAN Standard, nice right?!

Removing stretched VSAN configuration?

I had a question today around how to safely remove a stretched VSAN configuration without putting any of the workloads in danger. This is fairly straight forward to be honest, there are 1 or 2 things though which are important. (For those wondering why you would want to do this, some customers played with this option and started loading workloads on top of VSAN and then realized it was still running in stretched mode.) Here are the steps required:

  1. Click on your VSAN cluster and go to Manage and disable the stretched configuration
    • This will remove the witness host, but will leave 2 fault domains in tact
  2. Remove the two remaining fault domains
  3. Go to the Monitor section and click on Health and check the “virtual san object health”. Most likely it will be “red” as the “witness components” have gone missing. VSAN will repair this automatically by default in 60 minutes. We prefer to take step 4 though asap after removing the failure domains!
  4. Click “repair object immediately”, now witness components will be recreated and the VSAN cluster will be healthy again.
  5. Click “retest” after a couple of minutes

By the way, that “repair object immediately” feature can also be used in the case of a regular host failure where “components” have gone absent. Very useful feature, especially if you don’t expect a host to return any time soon (hardware failure for instance) and have the spare capacity.

Doing a stretched VSAN design?

As I have given various people already individually the formulas needed to calculate how much bandwidth is required I figured I would share this as well. If you are doing a stretched VSAN design you will want to read this excellent paper by Jase McCarty. This paper describes the bandwidth requirements between the “data sites” and from the data sites to the “witness site”. It provides the formula needed, and it will show you that the “general guidelines” provided during launch were relatively conservative. In many cases especially the the connection to the witness location can be low bandwidth. Just have a read when you are designing a stretched VSAN and do the math.
