** NOTE: 2010! No longer valid for 2011 π **
The VMworld Europe team gave me the opportunity to give away 1 free ticket for VMworld Europe 2010. (Please note, VMworld 2010 Europe Conference Ticket only!) I have been thinking about what kind of contest to set up and I even considered giving away the ticket to a random person. However, that doesn’t really cut it in my opinion. I would like this ticket to go to someone who really needs to be at VMworld. Someone who will really get the most out of it, someone who will use what he has learned to educate others, someone who has a project coming up and needs to apply his knowledge to bring a project / implementation to a success.
So what do you need to do in order to make a chance?
- Leave a comment with your Name and a valid email address
- Explain to us why you need to go to VMworld, we are looking for someone who will go the extra mile!
Who, when, where and what?
- Two VMware Employees(Thanks Frank and Andy!) and I will go through a selection procedure and will select a winner
- The winner will be announced on Tuesday 28th of September, closing date for the submission is Saturday 25th of September
- Please note, only a VMworld Conference Pass no travel/lodging
- VMware employees are not eligible
Good luck,

I am a new VMware Partner in the Columbus Ohio area with a passion for VMware and its products. I have been training non-stop to grow my partnership to the “Infrastructure” competency level. My only obstacle is the VCP exam which is schedule for next week.
My goal is to become an Enterprise level partner by the end of the year and focus primarily on the SMB market until I grow my practice to the Enterprise level.
I need to go to Copenhagen to help further my vmware knowledge and strengthen my position as a legitimate VMware partner. While at Copenhagen, I will blog, tweet, and update my facebook constantly on the amazing (magic like) VMware products.
I have been in IT for 25 years and started my IT training programming in PL/1 using Punch Cards so I have seen it all. In my opinion, VMware is the single largest disruptive technology that I’ve witnessed in my career. I’ve spent time in very large IT shops like Intel, ATT, and Limited Brands.
Please note that intoil.com remains work in progress and I am trying out VMWare’s “Website in a box” as a part of my solution using Joomla as the CMS to put it all together. It’s a
I have a VM lab in my home office with 3 Dell servers. One unique service offering that I offer to my customers is a ‘Free VM Lab” that they can use for a week. See my site for details. I am so confident that if I can get my lab in a customer’s location, I can sell VMware solutions and services.
I am hands down the best candidate for the tickets to Copenhagen. Thanks for your consideration!

About Myself:-
I’ve been working in 3.0.x and migrated that to 3.5.
Currently did a migration of 3.5 to vsphere at lab.
I’m fond of learning the technology and willing to drive myself towards cloud, hence started reading couple of books (Thomas Erl books and Computing by Rittinghouse and Ransome) and yet to implement the same. Also I gotta new job which is also related to “Cloud Computing”, So it will be useful if i get an opportunity to grab the most out of it from vmworld.

Hi,
Thanks for the offer. I am a VMware admin (VCP4, preparing for VCAP)from Romania and I need to go to VMWorld to help me prepare the design for the monster 10.000 user VDI implementation project we are having (we won’t have 10.000 users from the beginning, of course, but we need to plan ahead). We are evaluating View against Citrix and I also need to go to VMWorld to find out how to better support the case of VMware against Citrix because I am a true fan of VMware technology π

Hello,
My name is Dan, I’m a VCP-310, VCP-410. The company for which I work is preparing a new disaster recovery strategy with the idea in mind to replicate all mission critical machines to a central location. At the central location we were planning to have a vBlock but I didn’t had the chance to attend to EMC world and have more information about it.
I have already built at home a lab based on the virtual Celerra and SRM but it has its limitations. That’s why sitting in front of a VMworld lab, the sessions covering SRM and vBlock (which I saw that are many) and the possibility to see in action the latest in virtualization and composing technologies would be a great help in this large scale project.
I took this year the Enterprise and Design exams, on which my company fully supported me (travel, accommodation and exam fee) so asking for help with VMworld will be a little too much π
Last but definitely not least it will be a great thing for me to finally meet with the guys of which blogs I read daily: 007 :), Frank Denneman and Chad Sakac to name a few.
Thank you for this chance!

Since retiring from active duty at a small software company I founded, I have heard lots about this virtualisation stuff. Ballmer and some other guys tell me it’s just a fad and nothing to take seriously, however I am starting to wonder if that’s really true.
As a retiree, I don’t have a lot of spare cash lying around so a free conference ticket would really help me out. My Bombardier BD-700 can make it from Seattle to Copenhagen on a single tank so I should be OK for travel to the conference. I’m sure I can buy a place when I get there to stay for the week.

Hi,
First of all, great initiative Duncan! Itβs very nice of you and VMware.
Iβm a 30 years old infrastructure specialist, specialized in designing/building mid to large size virtual infrastructure environments based on VMware products. This also includes storage networks and SAN arrays. I blog & twit about interesting stuff that I come across during my projects. Currently, Iβm implementing a new virtual infrastructure for two customers at once. Iβve tried to convince my boss of the importance of VMWorld to the tech-guy like me, learning new technology, meeting people from the industry etc, but with no success. Instead, the management decided to send some non-tech guys. So I tried to save some money on my own to go to Copenhagen this year but itβs almost impossible when you are a working father of two boys ο. Anyway, I think that attending VMWorld would be very beneficial to my future projects and our current and new customers. I will also try to blog as much as possible about the event on my blog.
Good luck with the contest!

Hi,
I am actually writing this without the knowledge of one of my team. He came to our company many years ago just as the customer we were looking after were making the transition to VMWare. This guy lives and breaths VMWare and since leaving the team and rejoining 3 years later I am amazed at what he has done with the VMWare technologies. Through the recession and all there have been many cut backs as I’m sure all have noticed. One which I’m sure many can sympathize would be the lack of training and chances to go to such events as VMWorld.
I write this letter to you guys in hope that I can send this collegue to VMWorld which he on a daily basis wishes to go to but unless he wins the lottery will have to resort to reading about.
Cheers!

As a vExpert 2009 i was working on a Citrix/Hyper-V project last past month’s (i had no choice). This work caused me to realize that not working with VMware software gives you a difficult working life what is hard to explain to my colleques and customers. Things that i could easely do with VMWARE was not easy at all with this other piece of software. I really got myself almost down the drain loosing all touch with real virtualizsation as vmware is. I lost the vExpert 2010 award because i was not blogging about cool VMware features like SRM (wrote srm in a box with netapp simulator). After all this my colleque is now sent to vmworld instead of me. How worse can things go. So now i really need this ticket to get to life again, to restart my blog and spread the vmware word. With upcomming projects with Netapp en VMware (virtualise +500 10 to1servers )it would be grate to breath all the new technologies and last but not least: say peekaboo to my colleague and scare the shit out of him, because he is not axpecting me there π

I am working on a managed services outsource project for a large Insurance business in the UK and we are seeking to partner with someone to provide IaaS offering to deliver Desktop Computing and some hosting. Despite all of the market hype it’s become clear to me that the market in this space is extremely immature and that traditional vendors are still promoting the legacy approach to delivering these services. I want to go to VMWorld in Copenhagen to explore options available to start my own cloud services business which would offer exactly the type of utility compute model that we have been looking to buy ! I would like to better understand the extent to which service providers and other hosting services in Europe are getting behind this new delivery model and better understand the eco-system that’s growing up alongside Vcloud through speaking to exhibitors. It would also give me the opportunity to experience the new tools as home set-ups are expensive to establish.
I have been using VMWare since V 2.5 and am a firm believer in business value to be derived from investing in a move to this model. I’ve also never been go Copenhagen and knowing how infrequently many IT Admins and Architects are allowed out of their offices I expect that the social activities could be quite entertaining… π
Nick Fritsch says
Hi Duncan, my name is Nick Fritsch and I currently manage a 3 host vSphere environment. As it sounds, it’s a rather small environment and unfortunately it’s running well so I don’t have interaction with it on a daily basis.
I want to win the VMworld 2010 Copenhagen ticket for a couple reasons. First, I am desperately trying to expand my career. My technical knowledge is becoming rather static and I’m afraid of falling behind the curve, especially with all of the announcements made at VMworld 2010 San Francisco. I want to expand the role I have in virtualization and take my career to a new level. I think attending VMworld Copenhagen will help me to network with others who can help me learn how to expand my career.
Also, we are planning a SRM installation in the next 6 months and I could definitely use some best practices and training on how to accomplish a successful SRM implementation. We currently have a warm site at another data center that is running 2 vSphere hosts. Their sole purpose is for disaster recovery. I would like to learn how we can better utilize those hosts so that the investment made in those 2 hosts in both hardware and software along with the shared storage that is being replicated between the sites can be better utilized. Also, I want to utilize the features available in 4.1 and I want to learn how to best upgrade our ESX 4.0 hosts to ESXi 4.1. Finally, we are 12-24 months away from a virtual desktop implementation and I would like to learn more about all the available virtual desktop options available including VMware View, MokaFive and Kaviza, among others.
Finally, I will share the knowledge I gain through my blog (vmnick.wordpress.com) and through twitter (@nfritsch). I know my blog is relatively new however I’m continually trying to learn which I can then turn into a post. I’m currently reading two books, one being Mastering vSphere by Scott Lowe and the other a technical resource produced by NetApp concerning storage best practices with vSphere. I hope to turn the information I gain from those books into a post and I hope to turn the information I gain from VMworld 2010 Copenhagen into a handful of blog posts.
Thank you.

No enterprises, no big projects but steady advancing in virtualizing everything we touch π
Being in a beautifully small business I and one of my colleagues take care of everything: from the pre-sales activities to the final tests before production. We have just gained the status of VMware partners and we’re loving the ‘ooohhs’ from customers which never thought that virtualization is easy and that you can count on it.
With such work load I, honestly, don’t have so much time to practice in labs and so forth, thus the only way to actually see and touch and try *new* things is VMware World. Furthermore, having the chance to attend in Copenhagen’s VMware World is a really big opportunity not to miss anything that’ll be said and so to start touching things to virtualize I never touched so far… My eager colleague, who is constantly peeking over my shoulder, will have a crash course after Copenhagen that he will never forget π
See you in Copenhagen!

Hi Duncan, I am 27 yrs old from New Zealand working for an IT solutions provider. Iβve started my virtualisation journey back in 2007 when esx 3.0 was first released and learnt a lot by playing around and learning from scratch. I then moved to a virtualisation specialist company where I had more exposure and was given many challenges and went to that extra mile to solve some of the challenging problems to meet specific requirements. I was involved in number of implementations, upgrades, troubleshooting etc including design and deploying a VDI solution based on VMware View with SunRay thin clients for a major call center. Iβve also worked with xendesktop and leostream. My past colleagues helped me a lot from giving me the opportunity to learn and support.
I started my own blog vdi.co.nz to document problems I encounter and to share useful content for others.
I am currently with another major IT company where I specialise in implementing vmware related projects, enterprise backup solutions using vStorage API for vmware backups and cloud computing solutions on vmware platform. Our company is looking into vCloud Director also.
I would like to go to vmworld Copenhagen to learn, get hands on experience on vmware labs and networking which will help me with the number of projects am involved, including vCloud director. I am a vcp3, 4 and studying towards vcap. Going to vmworld will be very valuable to my company and to fellow colleagues to share the knowledge and experience I gain. Also keen to share the knowledge on my blog.

Having been a vcp since 2006 it’ll be a very interesting and educational trip. During this VMworld trip I hope to expand my knowledge about VMware products I’ve heard about but never had the opportunity to work with. It would be an awesome experience to talk to other attending people with real world experience in using those products. Meet up with people to talk about real datacenter issues people have and how they solved their problems from their point of view and learn about solving design issues from other views then just my own. Having seen this in a VMware design workshop for example; 1 business case and we ( 5 attendees ) came up with 5 different but valid solutions.
I’ll blog about the event and I’d like to offer you a beer in Copenhagen π

Hello. I got into virtualisation last year when I was struggling to start my career as a mechanical engineer. I do not have a lab, but have hands-on experience from converting a physical environment to virtual at my father’s small accountancy firm using ESXi 4. Of course my experimentation has been limited as it is a production environment and my exposure to the full VMware vSphere suite has mostly been through blogs such as yellow-bricks, techhead and others.
I would like to have the opportunity to experience first hand all the cool enterprise stuff that I’ve read about such as View, Cloud Director, vMotion etc. Furthermore, I want to progress to working with VMware’s products at a larger scale than I can today. Attending VMware World could not be a better place for me to network with professionals from all over the World and hopefully provide a stepping stone to a VMware virtualisation career.
Thank you

First of all thanks for the change of winning a ticket.
As Bill Gates already pointed out it’s becoming more and more evident that Steve B. and his band are on the wrong site of the rope, so for me as a Microsoft Engineer (and VCP 4 BTW) it’s very important to get to right site of the rope. I’ve been working with VMware products for a couple of years now, and i’m very interested in the vCloud architecture provided by VMware. Oh and Bill Gates can’t be attending VMWorld as there is a big event going on for Unicef π

As a result i didn’t get enough sleep this week, forgot to feed my cat, so now i only have one left! ( ok, that last one isn’t 100% true π ).

I know it looks a bit random but a bit about me I work for a UK local council, Who have no money now and after the spending review may have even less. We have 20 ESXi boxes in 2 sites. In the spirit of trying to do more with less trying to virtualise as much as possible. Though everything is configured and appears to be working well. Will be hoping to be able to improve performance and tune the setup allowing more business critical apps to be virtualised especially Exchange 2010. AS more will be expected of the virtual infrastructure I expect to have to troubleshoot more than i do now (which is not alot) and provide proven availability.
Along with this we have just started to implement SRM, using the one good book on the subject and some online sources for configuration. I’d be looking to use the lab time to build confidence in SRM. VDI sneaks in as we are looking to procure a solution in March the reason I have not put more View items in is that in the POC it was the easiest thing I have ever set up.
I do not have a blog but would be more than happy to write about my experience at VMworld and knowledge gained as guest articles
if I can find a blogger to publish them. There will be two people in my team eager to learn as much from me on my return.
I hope by applying the knowledge I gain from VMworld in the workplace and beyond. I can show that for next year a ticket is a worthwhile
expenditure for someone.
(The above list only covers 21 hours of things i need to see out of the 3 days there seems to be so much more to see and do maybe VMworld europe Needs another day)
Thanks for your consideration.

Hi Duncan,
It’s a shame that I didn’t make it to Vmworld last year, but one of the things in life you really can’t virtualize is getting a child!! And that’s what happened to my family that period!!
Also this year the same thing was planned for us, but our virtual machine became real hardware 2 days ago: I’m proud to say that our new wonder has been born! So in my eyes there’s no excuse not to make it to Copenhagen this time, but as you already will understand, the hardest thing in this period is convincing the other part in my relationship π …
As everybody knows in our specialism, IT is a passion! As a freelance IT consulant I spend many time in trying to know everything about Vmware virtualization and Vmworld is the highest item on my list!
In this busy period, and having a second child to grow up, I only can convince my wife this time to make it to Copenhagen with a free ticket!
So it’s all in your hands, and I really really really hope you can help me out with this!
My bags are virtually packed already and I really hope to get the chance to fasten seatbelts in da cloud again and fly over to VM World!! π

One of my dreams is to go to one of this events and never got it for the several companie i have been working in virtualization: it’s sad to say, but not lot of companies realise that is an investment and not a waste of money to send there people to get in contact and updated.
