I created this page as a home for the books I co-authored.
vSphere 5 Clustering Technical Deepdive
VMware vSphere 5.0 Clustering Technical Deepdive zooms in on three key components of every VMware based infrastructure and is by no means a “how to” guide. It covers the basic steps needed to create a vSphere HA and vSphere DRS cluster and to implement vSphere Storage DRS. Even more important, it explains the concepts and mechanisms behind HA, DRS and Storage DRS which will enable you to make well educated decisions. This book will take you in to the trenches of HA, DRS and Storage DRS and will give you the tools to understand and implement e.g. HA admission control policies, DRS resource pools, Datastore Clusters and resource allocation settings. On top of that each section contains basic design principles that can be used for designing, implementing or improving VMware infrastructures and fundamental supporting features like (Storage) vMotion, Storage I/O Control and much more are described in detail for the very first time.

Hi Duncan
I just ordered vSphere 4.1 HA and DRS Technical Deepdive from Amazon.
May I know is there any plan to publish volume 2, volume 3 etc and if yes, what will be the area you are planning to cover?
Myo
Yes we have a second version planned but I cannot comment on the details unfortunately.
I am reading “vSphere 4.1 HA and DRS Technical Deepdive” it is a fabulous book!
Bob
I have to agree, the “vSphere 4.1 HA and DRS Technical Deepdive” is one of the best vSphere books I have read. Looking forward to the nest book.
Where can we get the Book in the Uinted Kimgdom?
comcol.nl ships to the uk.
how about in India
I also wanted a version of the book.
is there a low price edition book available in india
Sorry, it is comcol.nl or amazon.com. we have an isbn so local shops should be able to order it if they want, but we haven’t actively looked for a distribution point in india.
for India check in flipkart
Continental distribution points would be helpful. ISBN orders are generally too slow and priced at a premium. I’ve been waiting 2 months for HA/DRS from Amazon to Australia. Amazon refunded my shipping costs and suggested I wait 2.5 months due to carrier problems. In the meantime, I’ve had several other deliveries arrive from the US in just days.
Any news on the electronic format (Kindle. iBooks etc)?
There will be no electronic copy.
Hi Duncan,
I’ve been reading your book vSpehere 4.1 HA and DRS technical deep dive, which is great.
On page 93 (Chapter 10) it says: “If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to either of the authors”.
What is the correct way to ask questions about the content or subject of the book? Here on this page, or another method?
Thanks
hi duncan
quick question is your deep drive book catered for experienced vsphere admins or novice readers benefit from the book as well?
Our goal has been to please both audiences. So for both there should be a lot to learn and think about.
I have read the HA/DRS Deepdive and its an excellent book. The explantion of Isolation response is very good.
Got my copy of DeepDive last week. Awesome way to explain these topics. Excellent work done.
If i by your ebook only.
Will i be able to read it in pdf format?
or I have to by Kindle device aslo?
No you need to download the Kindle Application. The kindle app runs on: Windows, OS X, iPad, Android etc.
When will VMware vSphere Clustering Technical Deep Dive be released?
What is the best book for Architecture Design for vSphere ESXi. I scanned HA DRS deepdive, getting my own copy.
Duncan, I am curious to know your experience with CreateSpace. Can you recommend it? It seems that they take such a large amount of profits.
Frank an I are not worried about profit. You don’t write a book to earn money to be honest. We prefer quality and service and so far Createspace has been good on both.
Hi ALL,
SOrry I dint find the right place to put this question on this site .. I want to replace SSL certificates on ESX 4.1 with CA signed certificates . I searched a lot on the web, everywhere its directing me to vcenter .

hi Duncan,
Finally i have received the hard-copy of the VSphere 5 clustering book today. Have started to go through 1st chapter and seems interesting.
Thanks for book and keep writing more books that helps people understand and can dive deeper into the ocean of Vmware.
Regards,
Srinivas
Hi Duncan,
I already read the vsphere 4 deep dive book which was great. Since a few days I am reading the vsphere 5 deep dive which goes further then the last book.
Till now I had some trouble to fully understand the MinFreePct thing (chapter 12 page 154-155). The share-per-page metric is clear but the whole threshold and free memory state facts are not totally clear for me.
Is it possible to make a blog post arround this?
regards
Andreas
why am i having such a hard time finding the color version of the 5.0 clustering deepdive book?
Hi Duncan,
