VMworld session voting

Duncan Epping · May 29, 2012 ·

I submitted several sessions. Of course, just like everyone else, I could use your help when it comes to voting. These are the ones I submitted (or are part of):

  • 1154 – vCloud Director Infrastructure Resiliency – DR of the Cloud – Chris Colotti and Duncan Epping
In this session Chris and I will focus on vCloud Director infrastructure resilience. Although there is no direct vCloud Director and Site Recovery manager integration, we will look at how to replicate the data, what applications are primary targets, how to size environments, how to maintain multi-tenancy, and what to avoid when architecting these solutions.
  • 1159 – Architecting and Operating a vSphere Metro Storage Cluster – Lee Dilworth and Duncan Epping
In this session Lee Dilworth and I will discuss the design and operational considerations for vSphere Metro Storage Clusters environments, also commonly referred to as stretched cluster environments. Best practices around implementation and design will be shared. Various failure scenarios which can occur in a stretched storage environment are discussed in-depth including how vSphere 5 responds to these failures.
  • 1202 – Cloud Infrastructure Architecture and Operations Q&A – Chris Colotti, Kamau Wanguhu, Aidan Dalgleish and Duncan Epping
This is the only session at VMworld which will allow you to freely ask four VMware Certified Design Experts (VCDX) questions around how to architect and operate your cloud infrastructure. Our panel holds expertise on Networking, Storage, vCloud Director and vSphere and consists of Chris Colotti (VCDX037), Kamau Wanguhu (VCDX003), Aidan Dalgleish (VCDX010) and Duncan Epping (VCDX007). We will help you make the right decisions while explaining some of the underlying fundamental concepts of the Cloud Infrastructure Suite allowing you to optimize your operations and architecture. This is one of those sessions that you cannot afford to miss out on!
  • 1504 – Ask the Expert vBloggers – Scott Lowe, Duncan Epping, Rick Scherer, Frank Denneman, Chad Sakac
One of the highest rated sessions at VMworld is back for it’s fifth year! Come meet four VMware Certified Design Experts (VCDX) on stage answering your questions. We get the top Virtualization Bloggers in the industry and get them on stage answering your questions in a wide array of topics.

Of course there are a million other great sessions you should be voting for… Chris Colotti, David Hill, Frank Denneman, Cormac Hogan, Tom Stephens and many others submitted excellent sessions, don’t forget to vote for them as well. Thanks for taking the time!

Cool contest: Tell your VC Ops story!

Duncan Epping · May 23, 2012 ·

A couple of weeks back the VC Ops team approached me and asked if I wanted to help out judging for contest submissions. When they explained what it was exactly about I accepted and I figured I would share with you what will be announced later today! VMware.com/go/vcops-story just went live and some more details can be found there, in short what they will be looking for is cool use case stories around VC Ops. This could be any product of the VC Ops suite, or even better a combination of products. The cool thing is that the are two first prizes and each of those gets a free ticket to VMworld and gets to speak at the eventduring a session! (One will be for Barcelona and the other for San Francisco) Second price is “$500 Amex Gift Card / Bag of VMware Swag”.

If you are a VC Ops customer and have a great story to tell and don’t mind winning a free ticket and speaking at an event like VMworld I highly suggest you go for it! I have been told that during the VMTN Podcast on Wednesday May 23 @ 12PM PST more details will be shared so make sure to tune in!

Now head over to VMware.com/go/vcops-story and start winning!

VMworld call for papers just opened up…

Duncan Epping · Apr 18, 2012 ·

Call for papers for VMworld just opened up and I am finalizing two of the sessions I will submit. Besides these two sessions I suspect I will be part of the expert program again, meaning that I will be available for 15 minute one on one’s and several group discussions. Currently I am planning to submit the following sessions:

  • DR of the Cloud – In this session Chris Colotti and I will focus on vCloud Director infrastructure resilience.  We will go over the concept Chris and I developed and discuss the recommended practices and operational aspects of DR of the Cloud.
  • Architecting and Operating a vSphere Metro Storage Cluster – In this session Lee Dilworth and I will discuss the design and operational considerations for vSphere Metro Storage Clusters environments. Our focus will primarily be vSphere though!

I am considering submitting another session. I know many have enjoyed the open-floor / Q&A style sessions, but the main topic was always HA and DRS aka vSphere Clustering. Currently I am thinking “Cloud Infrastructure Q&A”… but if you could pick a topic what would you like to see and who would you love to see on the panel? (Max 4 people) I try to make it happen!

Spotted at VMworld

Duncan Epping · Oct 29, 2011 ·

I had this post sitting in my “Draft” box for a week and didn’t notice it never got published. Although a bit late here it is. At VMworld Copenhagen I tried to spot a whole bunch of rockstar Bloggers / Tweeps. I tweeted their pics during the show but I figured not everyone of you is online all of the time so I thought I would post them here as well. Note that they didn’t know I took this picture at the time :-). I added a link to their twitter account just in case you aren’t following them yet.
