VMworld 2012 San Francisco… what a week

Duncan Epping · Sep 2, 2012 ·

It was a crazy week last week, VMworld 2012 SFO kept us all very very busy. I have a bunch of blog articles to finalize, so more will follow this week. Just a couple of keywords that summarize the craziness of this week for me:

  • New book release, vSphere 5.1 Clustering Deepdive
  • 5 speaking slots, 1 group discussion slot and 2 “expert” slots
  • Meetings, meetings and more meetings
  • Receptions and parties, triple booked every evening
  • 1200+ copies of the 5.1 book handed out / sold at VMworld!

Just some random pics to give an impression of the week… Thanks everyone for taking these pictures. If you have full res pictures please email them to me (duncan @ yellow-…com).

And a VMworld TV video to top it off. (Nice to see the infamous Eric Sloof presenting / interviewing for VMworld TV along side Jeremy van Doorn!) Make sure to follow VMworldTV on twitter for updates!

I want to thank everyone who took the time to say hi, provide feedback, have open discussions or just wanted to shake hands / get books signed. I really appreciate it and it was great meeting all of you!

See you again in Barcelona,

#RealWomenOfVirtualInfrastructure

Duncan Epping · Aug 22, 2012 ·

I just was informed about a very cool initiative that will take place next Wednesday (29th) at VMworld:

Not enough women in tech? See who powers the cloud at the VMware booth one week from today #vmworld #RealWomenOfVirtualInfrastructure

— Alan Renouf (@alanrenouf) August 22, 2012

I think it is great that there are so many smart talented women working for VMware with a huge passion for virtualization / cloud. I encourage everyone to visit the VMware booth on Wednesday at VMworld, but especially female attendees to meet their colleagues, (I was told between 10 and noon) and have a chat about cloud, virtualization, networking / storage etc!

The first rule of #NotSupported is…..

Duncan Epping · Aug 20, 2012 ·

You might have seen Alan Renouf’s blog post on this… for the very first time we will have #notsupported sessions at VMworld. This is the brainchild of Randy Keener aka @vmrandy.

VMworld 2012- #notsuppported Looking forward to what should be the best track of the event w/ @DuncanYB, @lamw, @alanrenouf +more!

— Randy Keener (@VMrandy) July 20, 2012

These lightning sessions (15 minute max) are all about the fun stuff you can do with vSphere / vCloud / SRM, note that almost everything discussed at these sessions is totally unsupported… but nevertheless very cool to try out or mess around with right. What can you expect?

  • Nested ESXi to the extreme!
  • (ab)using the Site Recovery Manager storage replication adaptors (SRA)
  • Affinity Rules on Site Recovery Manager shadow VMs..

Where is it?

Check out the Community Lounge at VMworld, the sessions will be hosted from 1pm – 3pm each day, for a schedule of the sessions visit this link below – make sure you add them to your calendars as you wont want to miss them, believe me! – More information will be added with the run up to VMworld. For those who can’t wait… here is the list for all the sessions: #NotSupported Session List

Meet the Experts at VMworld!

Duncan Epping · Aug 17, 2012 ·

This year at VMworld there is again the opportunity to meet some of the leading VMware / vCloud experts. Several people have asked me how this “Meet the Experts” works so I figured I would write a short article about it. If you are interested in having a 30 minute conversation make sure to reserve your slot at the Lounge reception desk, Moscone West, Level 2. You can schedule these slots on: Sunday 11am – 6pm, Monday 7am – 7pm,  Tuesday 7am – 6pm, Wednesday 7am – 5:30pm and Thursday, August 30 – 8am-3pm.

Here is my schedule. I suggest you sign up as soon as you can as there are only 4 slots available in total.

  • Monday 12:00 – 13:00 –  EXPERTS02 – Meet the Experts – 02
  • Wednesday 12:30 – 13:30 –  EXPERTS13 – Meet The Experts – 13

A full list of Expert can be found on the VMworld.com website under “meet the experts”. You will find well known bloggers like Cormac Hogan and Alan Renouf there… but also engineers like Keith Farkas (vSphere HA) and product managers like Vijay Ramachandran (Storage).

So make sure to grab your spot while you still can and sit down with the expert for a chat!
