VCDX Design Exam, how to prepare?

Duncan Epping · Mar 7, 2009 ·

Eric Sloof just posted that a beta of the Design Exam, which is part of the VCDX Certification, is available as of now.

VMware is pleased to announce the availability of the Design Exam (beta).  I can take the exam at Pearson VUE Professional Centers in London, Frankfurt, Paris and Madrid. Only individuals who have successfully passed the Enterprise Administration Exam and have been authorized by VMware will be able to register to take this exam.  The exam is four (4) hours in length to allow time for candidates to comment on each item. My comments are invaluable in improving the overall exam.

I already did the exam a couple of months ago when it wasn’t even Beta yet(Yes, I passed the Enterprise Exam Jason, but I haven’t received my score for the Design exam yet). I used the following documents to prepare for the exams, both Design and Enterprise, but because I didn’t had much time to prepare I mainly focused on the Enterprise exam:

  • VMbook – Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery
  • Performance Characterization of VMFS and RDM Using a SAN
  • Setup for Microsoft Clustering
  • DRS Performance and Best Practices
  • VMware Consolidated Backup Best Practices Guidelines and Considerations
  • Virtual Machine Backup Guide
  • VI3 Security Hardening
  • Resource Management Guide
  • SAN System Design and Deployment Guide
  • Fibre Channel SAN Configuration Guide
  • ESX Server Configuration Guide
  • Configuring and Troubleshooting N-Port ID Virtualization
  • How NPIV-Based LUN Access Works
  • Requirements for using NPIV

In my opinion the Design exam is tougher than the Enterprise exam, but I did both exams on the same day and I didn’t know what to expect from the Design exam. I would also suggest that besides reading the articles above you also dig into the different type of designs and the phases etc. Good luck!

VCDX Design Exam available end February

Duncan Epping · Feb 5, 2009 ·

I was just answering questions on the VMTN forum when I noticed a reply in the VCDX Design Exam topic. For those who already passed the Enterprise Exam the Design Exam will be available at the end of February!

Hello,

The Design Exam will be available by the end of this month. Keep in mind that once the exam is officially announced there is likely to be limited initial availability. It was always our plan to release this exam following the release of the Enterprise Admin Exam, since you must take the Enterprise Exam before you take the Design Exam. Unfortunately, the technical requirements for the Enterprise Admin Exam took some time to implement, which pushed the Design Exam release back.

Study guide for VCDX Enterprise Exam 3.5

Duncan Epping · Dec 9, 2008 ·

Peter van den Bosch, just posted a great study guide for the VCDX Enterprise Exam 3.5. If you’re scheduled for the exam be sure to read the document. It contains most of the topics mentioned in the blueprint for this exam.

VCDX Enterprise Exam

Duncan Epping · Nov 20, 2008 ·

Just received the following email:

Hello Duncan Epping,

Thank you for your interest in the VMware Certified Design Expert program. I am pleased to inform you that you have PASSED the Enterprise Administration Exam.

For everyone that still needs to take this exam be sure to do the VI3.5: Deploy Secure & Analyze course and read the blueprint before you even start. It be worth checking out Jason’s blog on VCDX and on VirtualTroll you can find links to study material for the Design Exam. (Most of the Design Exam study material are also valid for the Enterprise Exam!)

So for everyone that still has to take the exam, prepare well! Know your esxcfg-* commands, and be sure to know the basics inside out!

VMware Design Course

Duncan Epping · Oct 17, 2008 ·

As Eric Sloof blogged recently, the Design Course will be available soon. I’ve already received the course material a couple of weeks ago to prepare for the VCDX design exam. This course is targeted at architects and engineers developing designs. According to the datasheet the VI3 Install And Configure course is a prerequisite. Those who are preparing for VCDX should definitely look into the blueprint for this exam and I can also heavily recommend the VI3 Deploy, Secure and Analyze course.

Other documents that I can recommend for the VCDX certification track preparation:

  • VMbook – Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery
  • Performance Characterization of VMFS and RDM Using a SAN
  • Setup for Microsoft Clustering
  • Performance Characterization of VMFS and RDM Using a SAN
  • DRS Performance and Best Practices
  • VMware Consolidated Backup Best Practices Guidelines and Considerations
  • Virtual Machine Backup Guide
  • VI3 Security Hardening
  • Resource Management Guide
  • SAN System Design and Deployment Guide
Be sure to read them thoroughly and take your time to prepare for the exams(Enterprise & Design)!
