Fling: Auto Deploy GUI

Duncan Epping · Feb 9, 2012 ·

Many of you probably know the PXE Manager fling which Max Daneri created… Max has been working on something really cool, a brand new fling: Auto Deploy GUI! I had the pleasure of test driving the GUI and providing early feedback to Max when he had just started working on it and since then it has come a long way! It is a great and useful tool which I hope will at some point be part of vCenter. Once again, great work Max! I suggest that all of you check out this excellent fling and provide Max with feedback so that he can continue to develop and improve it.

The Auto-Deploy GUI fling is an 8MB download and allows you to configure auto-deploy without the need to use PowerCLI. It comes with a practical deployment guide which is easy to follow and should allow all of you to test this in your labs! Download it it now and get started!

The Auto Deploy GUI is a vSphere plug-in for the VMware vSphere Auto Deploy component. The GUI plug-in allows a user to easily manage the setup and deployment requirements in a stateless environment managed by Auto Deploy. Some of the features provided through the GUI include the ability to add/remove Depots, list/create/modify Image Profiles, list VIB details, create/modify rules to map hosts to Image Profiles, check compliance of hosts against these rules and re-mediate hosts.

PXE Manager Fling blog series

Duncan Epping · Jul 11, 2011 ·

One of the upcoming blogs which I really enjoy reading is Arent Consulting by Tom Arentsen. I know Tom for a while as I have been involved with some of his projects and he really knows what he is talking about and is a nice guy. I just noticed his series of articles on the PXE Manager fling and felt that it deserved more attention than it has been getting so far.

PXE Manager is a great fling which enables enables ESXi host state (firmware) management and provisioning. It is probably my favorite fling and I most definitely recommend reading the following articles to get a better understanding of how it works and how it can help you migrating to ESXi or simplifying your ESXi environment!

  • PXE Manager Part 0 – Introduction
  • PXE Manager Part I – PXE Manager Installation
  • PXE Manager Part II – PXE Agent Installation
  • PXE Manager Part III – Configuration of PXE Manager
  • PXE Manager Part IV – Add a driver into the ESXi image (oem.tgz)
  • PXE Manager Part V – Add a Stateful ESXi Host
  • PXE Manager Part VI – How does it work

If you have some spare time on your hands, read the article and play around with the Fling.

Fling: PXE Manager for vCenter

Duncan Epping · Apr 22, 2011 ·

It is finally released… PXE Manager for vCenter. My former Cloud colleague Max Daneri of VMTS fame has worked very  very hard on this and actually demoed it at VMworld in 2009. I know Max is already working on the next release which of course will work with the upcoming vSphere version as well. So if you’ve tested it and have feedback don’t forget to leave a comment on labs.vmware.com.

PXE Manager for vCenter enables ESXi host state (firmware) management and provisioning. Specifically, it allows:

  • Automated provisioning of new ESXi hosts stateless and stateful (no ESX)
  • ESXi host state (firmware) backup, restore, and archiving with retention
  • ESXi builds repository management (stateless and statefull)
  • ESXi Patch management
  • Multi vCenter support
  • Multi network support with agents (Linux CentOS virtual appliance will be available later)
  • Wake on Lan
  • Hosts memtest
  • vCenter plugin
  • Deploy directly to VMware Cloud Director
  • Deploy to Cisco UCS blades
