You don’t need any brains to listen to music pt III

Duncan Epping · Nov 28, 2010 ·

It is one of those days again… It is time to blog about something different than VMware, virtualization, cloud or storage… Music. Over the last couple of months there are a couple of songs which I just can’t stop listening to.

The first song is Parade Of the Dead by the almighty Black Label Society. I realize that many of you might not appreciate Black Label Society but this is one of those tracks that can get you pumped up for everything. Feeling down? Going for a 10K run? Need to lose some of that frustration? This song literally solves everything, well at least in my case it does. The vocals combined with bonecrushing riffs and those drums just keep on marching on… you will know what I mean when you listen to the track.

Again I fully understand that some might appreciate music with less dB violence. The following track, Munich, has literally been one of my favorite tracks over the past years and it is one of my favorite bands as well. Editors made a huge impression on my when I saw them live, and still every album and every song reminds of that concert. I actually don’t really know why I like this song so much, I guess the fact that it is uptempo helps… plus that it used to be one of my sons favorite songs as well… a three years(back then, he is now 8) old Dutch kid singing a song in English and knowing every word does make an impression.

You don’t need any brains to listen to music pt II

Mike Laverick just posted an article about music and that triggered this one. I already did a couple of posts with youtube clips so let’s continue the tradition. Unfortunately I could not find the official videos of the latter two… but who cares anyway.

Editors – Papillon
Probably one of the best concerts I’ve seen over the last couple of years. There’s not much more I can say, they played an amazing show and this is one of the tracks of their latest album. Each album they’ve produced has a different sound but it doesn’t sound forced, it’s an evolution….

Besides music that’s almost depressing I also love music which sounds energetic and aggressive but has positive touch. One of the bands that most definitely falls into that category is Minor Threat. Minor Threat is more or less responsible for the existence of a sub genre called straight edge hardcore. For those who don’t know what “straight edge” is check wikipedia.

One of the bands that I haven’t seen live but that blew me away with a new album is Them Crooked Vultures. Although not all review were positive I think people reviewing music should take a couple of steps back. Expectations around Them Crooked Vultures were so high that it was impossible to meet these. That was also never the goal of Them Crooked Vultures. These guys wanted to produce a solid rock album and they did.

You don’t need any brains to listen to music

Luciano Pavarotti once said, “You don’t need any brains to listen to music”, and he’s right… that’s why I love music. Whenever I need to clear my head I pick up my mp3 player and go outside for run.

As you probably already know I’ve got a pretty diverse taste in music and some were really surprised by my previous picks. (1, 2) Not many people expected me to be a hardcore “kid”, and I’m talking about hardcore punk not the rave stuff. Besides hardcore I’ve also got a “weak” for British bands and old thrash metal. It’s a weird combination, I know.

I’ve picked three bands again that helped me clear my head over the last couple of months. I love to explore new bands and would like to ask every single blogger out there to post a top-3 of your favorite bands at the moment. [Read more…] about You don’t need any brains to listen to music

Something different…

Duncan Epping · Nov 23, 2008 ·

A while a go I posted a couple of my fav. songs, something different for a change. I really enjoyed writing the article cause I’ve always been a huge fan of music, alternative music that is. The cool thing about writing these articles is looking up the videos on youtube.

So I’m gonna do three songs this time, and try to explain why I picked these songs.

In my previous edition I included Pearl Jam. PJ definitely produced the best grunge album ever, TEN. But Nirvana is the best grunge band. The intensity, energy, atmosphere and the pure raw sound made this band in to a legendary one. It’s a shame Kurt Cobain threw away all the talent he had. This was their first video for one of the best grunge labels Sub Pop:

The second song is from a band called Down. Down isn’t a full time band, it’s more of a side project or should I say supergroup. Down contains of members and former members of Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar and Eyehategod. Normally I’m no fan of supergroups cause for some reason it hardly ever works out. But Down is definitely an exception. Their “debut” album Nola is still one of the best metal CD’s ever. Just listen to this song, Stone the Crow:

It took me a lot of time before I picked this third song. There are so many great songs and bands out there. Most songs I picked so far were “old” songs so that’s why I picked a more recent song, Kaiser Chiefs – Never miss a beat. Although this is probably the only song on their new album I actually like I do still think KC is a great band. Their debut album “employment” is amazing, and so is this track… I really like it and my kids love it:
