Nice read…

Duncan Epping · Apr 17, 2008 ·

A colleague(thanks Ivo) pointed me out to this great PDF by Cisco. As expected, it deals mainly about networking. Things like VST, EST, Channels, Trunking, Portfast and more are covered.

One thing that stands out the most is that Cisco recommends to use load balancing based on Virtual Port ID instead of creating an ether channel with load balancing on IP-Hash. Just check out the PDF for more recommendations.

Upgrade to 3.5/2.5 update 1

Duncan Epping · Apr 16, 2008 ·

Just upgraded a production environment to 3.5 update 1 and 2.5 update 1. Everything went surprisingly smooth. Looking at the Update Manager I noticed the total amount of 40 patches at this moment for 3.5. If you have a closer look you will notice that a lot of those are related to specific hardware or packages. I heard a couple of rumors that the Update Manager will do “selective” updates in the future depending on the hardware that the system holds. About the packages, I guess that will be history when ESXi is the only Hypervisor around….

Anyway, the upgrade went smoothly.

Discover a New Perspective with 8.9 Inch Eee PC 900: This new generation of the ever popular PC packs in a whole range of hardware that includes a 8.9 inch widescreen, a 1.3M pixels webcam, the new innovative FingerGlide and 12GB and 20GB storage capacities for Windows and Linux platforms respectively.

Mobility is one of the major factors attributed to the Eee PC’s success; and this is in part due to the use of the built-in Solid State Disk (SSD) technology – which offers a quiet, energy saving and shock proof design for stable computing on-the-go.

Through extensive R&D, the inclusion of the 8.9″ display screen does not affect the overall weight of the Eee PC 900, which remains below 1kg and maintains the ultra portable theme that has become synonymous with the Eee PC. With this large screen size of 8.9″, a resolution of 1024 x 600 is achieved – allowing users to view a single A4 page without the need to scroll left or right and making it much easier and more effective when reading or working on documents.

So if someone feels the urge and wants to sponsor me, this blog is a hint… 🙂

Swapping and/or ballooning

Duncan Epping · Apr 14, 2008 ·

Today a customer called about a problem with the Exchange VM. For some reason the ESX Host where this VM resided was always swapping/ballooning. They checked and double checked the settings but could not find the problem. After a quick scan I noticed that there were limits set on memory for each VM. This particular VM had 1536MB of memory and a limit of 1024MB. After changing the setting back to it’s default setting, “unlimited”, the message was gone. I haven’t got a clue why this setup this way, limitting the memory to the exact amount assigned to a VM… weird, but problem solved.
