Disabling TPS hurting performance?

Duncan Epping · May 11, 2010 ·

On the internal mailinglist there was a discussion today around how disabling TPS (Transparent Page Sharing) could negativitely impact performance. It is something I hadn’t thought about yet but when you do think about it it actually does make sense and is definitely something to keep in mind.

Most new servers have some sort of NUMA architecture today. As hopefully all of you know TPS does not cross a NUMA node boundary. This basically means that pages will not be shared between NUMA nodes. Another thing that Frank Denneman already described in his article here is that when memory pages are allocated remotely there is a memory penalty associated with it. (Did you know there is an “esxtop” metric, N%L,which shows the percentage of remote pages?) These pages are accessed across an interconnect bus which is always slower than so called local memory.

Now you might ask what is the link between NUMA, TPS and degraded performance? Think about it for a second… TPS decreases the amount of physical pages needed. If TPS is disabled there is no sharing and chances of going across NUMA nodes are increased and as stated this will definitely impact performance. Funny how disabling a mechanism(TPS) which is often associated with “CPU overhead” can have a negative impact on memory latency.

Jobs, Jobs, Jobs… we are still growing

Duncan Epping · May 8, 2010 ·

We just keep expanding… the amount of work is insane and we need help.

  • 19280 – TS Cloud Services- Consulting Architect (Enterprise) (US)
  • 17471 – Senior Consultant- Cloud Services (US)
  • 17473 – Senior Engagement Project Manager – Cloud Services (US)
  • 18016 – Cloud Solutions Architect (US)
  • ……

I guess the list never ends. Before we can fill this positions I bet more will be opened up.

About VMware’s TS Cloud Services Team:
As part of VMware’s strategic vCloud initiative, VMware is developing a new Cloud Services team that is 100% focused on deploying VMware-based “clouds” for our large customers. The Cloud Services team is organized centrally within the WW Technical Services Organization and brings specialized consulting expertise to support the worldwide VMware field PSO team as they help customers implement VMware-based clouds.

Tech Summit –> VMworld Self-paced labs

Duncan Epping · May 7, 2010 ·

This week all of VMware Technical Services gathered at the Hilton in San Francisco for the annual VMware TS Technical Summit. TS stands for Technical Services which basically means all field personnel of VMware, both pre- and post-sales. Besides all the great  deep-dive sessions there was also a gigantic lab. 200 seats powered by Cisco UCS and NetApp Storage. (As Vaughn has already shown you guys here.)

I was part of one of the Lab teams. Unfortunately I can’t tell much about our Lab as the product has still not been officially announced. However I can say that it rocked, our Lab was the most attended Lab during Tech Summit! These Labs were the trial for VMworld and I can honestly say I was impressed. The Lab Team, and I am talking about the TechOps and the infamous GETO Team, did an excellent job again and managed to provision over 2000 Lab sessions in just four days… Although I am dead tired, I can’t wait for VMworld to start and help you guys with these labs I can promise you it will rock.

HA Retries

Duncan Epping · May 6, 2010 ·

I am working on a special project at the moment. I noticed something I never realized before and wanted to share it with you guys. When a restart of a VM fails VMware HA will retry this.

The amount of VMware HA retries is configurable as of vCenter 2.5 U4 with the advanced option “das.maxvmrestartcount”. The default value is 5. Pre vCenter 2.5 U4 HA would keep retrying forever which could lead to serious problems as described in KB article 1009625 where multiple virtual machines would be registered on multiple hosts simultaneously leading to a confusing and inconsistent state.(http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1009625)

Important to note is that HA will try to start the virtual machine on each of the hosts in the affected cluster, if this is unsuccessful the restart count will be increased by 1. In other words, if a cluster contains 32 hosts HA will try to start the virtual machine on all hosts and count it as a single try. Something I definitely never realized and something that definitely is worth knowing.
