FYI: Microsoft’s live migration

Duncan Epping · Sep 8, 2008 ·

So Microsoft just announced that the next version of Hyper-V, which will be out with Windows 2008 R2, will contain live migration! There are couple of other note worthy news items:

  • Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008, a new hypervisor-based server virtualization product (like ESXi), will be released within 30 days and be available at no cost via the Web
  • Microsoft will demonstrate live migration feature of Windows Server 2008 R2. And the next version of Microsoft Hyper-V Server (the one after 2008) will have live migration capabilities.
  • System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 will be released within 30 days [not a surprise], which will manage Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V, Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2, Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 or VMware Virtual Infrastructure 3

So the big questions is, when can we expect this feature?

The answer can be found on this blog article.

  • A release called Windows Server 2008 R2 is still on the books (now officially slated for 2010).

I’m really curious about R2 and hope we can expect a Beta soon!!

Small changes to my blog

Duncan Epping · Sep 2, 2008 ·

Because of the amount of traffic being produced by several specific parts of the website I will make some minor changes over the next couple of days. I’ve also debugged the My Del.icio.us section which wasn’t working anymore, you can click the links again if you’re interested in what I’m reading on the web.

I’ve also changed the social bookmarking plugin. The previous one was one in the top 3 of bandwidth for reasons unclear to me cause it wasn’t that spectacular. So I’ve added an “add this button”. If there are icons missing on the initial popup that should be there than just let me know and I will add them!

And if you’ve got any other ideas on how I can improve readability or have more dynamic content than don’t hesitate to let me know!

And besides these small changes check out NTPro! Eric did some major redesigning! Great job,

Brand new blogs added to the Planet V12

Duncan Epping · Aug 29, 2008 ·

John just added a whole bunch of cool new blogs to the Planet V12 RSS Feed! What an enormous list of cool blogs and news sites. This is almost too much! It would be cool if there were at least two sections, technical and news for instance. I know not every blog is that strict but their must be a way to divide it so it doesn’t take me two days just to catch up. And Microsoft also started feeding, so another feed to read!

Anyway, Planet V12, the place to be!

VI Powershell Contest

Duncan Epping · Aug 28, 2008 ·

I was just checking out the scripts on the VI Powershell Contest. There’s some really cool stuff on there. One of the things I noticed is that out of the 16 contestants so far at least 5 are from the Netherlands!!! Anyway, there are some cool scripts on this page, check it out. And if you think you are up to the challenge, enter the competition now cause there are only two days left!

Cisco just bought….

Duncan Epping · Aug 28, 2008 ·

Cisco just bought PostPath, PostPath offers a Linux-based e-mail, calendaring and collaboration solution. It is interoperable with many other e-mail solutions and provides a browser-independent AJAX Web client. In addition, PostPath’s software is compatible with a number of mobile clients. Most of you guys probably know Zimbra, an open source competitor of Exchange… PostPath can be compared to Zimbra

Under the terms of the agreement, Cisco will pay approximately $215 million in exchange for all shares of PostPath. The transaction will be accounted for in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. The acquisition is subject to various standard closing conditions and is expected to be complete in Cisco’s first quarter of fiscal year 2009. Upon completion of the acquisition, PostPath employees will become part of the Cisco Collaboration Software Group (CSG). CSG is part of the recently established Software Group, consisting of Cisco’s major software businesses; including the IOS network operating system, network and service management, Unified Communications solutions, policy management, and SaaS offerings.

The acquisition of PostPath complements our strategy to develop an integrated collaboration platform designed for how we work today and into the future, providing real productivity gains and a more satisfying user experience”, said Doug Dennerline, Cisco senior vice president, Collaboration Software Group. “Our ‘cloud-based’ delivery model offers our customers rapid deployment and compelling economics.
