VCAP is nice, but what about VCDX 4?

Duncan Epping · May 24, 2010 ·

Looking at the VMware education website you can guess what the steps are to become a VCDX4:

VCP4 → VCAP4-DCA → VCAP4-DCD → Approved Design → Successful Defense = VCDX4

Please keep in mind that I am just guessing here, and this is not an official statement. Updates on the VCDX section of the VMware website can be expected any time soon now. The big question of course is what about those who are already certified? What will the upgrade path be? Honestly, I don’t know… we will just have to wait and see.

[UPDATE]

The info has just been released (Thanks Eric “scoop” Sloof) and I guess I was right:

  1. Be a VMware Certified Professional on vSphere 4 (VCP4)
  2. Pass the VCAP – Datacenter Administration Exam
  3. Pass the VCAP – Datacenter Design Exam
  4. Submit a VCDX4-DCD Application that is accepted
  5. Successfully present and defend a VMware Infrastructure Design and Implementation Plan

The following VMware advanced courses are recommended for VCDX certification preparation but are not required:

  • VMware vSphere: Design Workshop [V4]
  • VMware vSphere: Troubleshooting [V4]
  • VMware vSphere: Manage for Performance [V4]
  • VMware vSphere: Manage and Design for Security – coming soon
  • Automation with VMware PowerCLI – coming soon

Another big question is what about those that are on the VCDX3 tract. Those folks may have taken 1 or 2 of those tests. Do they have to redo them for VCDX4? Those tests cost about $400 a pop.

It is the primary reason I haven’t pursued VCDX. But, with this announcement, I’m all in. I can easily be ready to take the test in July. I wouldn’t mind taking a Beta test but based on how long it took VMware to grade the VCP4 beta exams I think waiting to July 12 would be the best course of action..

Those that are VCDX3 will only need to pass the vSphere Design Exam(when released) to be VCDX4 certified.

so how about people in the middle of their VCDX3? i’ve done both the Enterprise Administration and Design exams. Do I persue submissal and the defense on 3 and do the design exam on VCDX4?

I think a lot of the “If I’m on VCDX3 stuff now what happens” questions are actually answered in the above figures. The short of it is that depending on where you are you may end up taking discounted versions of the 4.X test before proceeding.

I’m more curious about the VCDX-DCD designation. Does this imply that there will be multiple designations for the VCDX? Say a VCDX-DCA or possibly LM/View/etc. focused?

We talked about the upgrade path in yesterdays Brown Bag w/ Jon Hall:

I’ve also linked to various follow-up posts that go into more detail.

    Thanks,
