VCP 4 exam…

Duncan Epping · Nov 14, 2009 ·

Today, Friday the 13th, I did my VCP 4 exam. I was a bit nervous as I, literally, only had a couple of hours to prepare. I did however pass. Because I only had a couple of hours to prepare I focused on what I expected to be the most difficult part to score on, the max configs. I used Simon’s VCP vSphere practice exam to test if I actually knew them or not. Here are the links to the resources I used:

  • Configuration Maximums for VMware vSphere 4.0 (Updated 9/23/2009)
  • Resource Management Guide
  • What’s New in VMware vSphere 4.0

So who’s next?

I had the swine flu when I took the test and didn’t get as much studying as I wanted to. I memorized all of the configuration maximums and didn’t get many questions on them. My coworker took his test and said most of his questions were about them. We both passed so I’m not complaining, but I was freaking out when they didn’t come up on my test and that was what I mostly studied.

Congratulations Duncan! An aquaintance of mine got a perfect score of 500 and the other got a 450 or better. Did you get a perfect score, or are you in the “room for improvement” club like most everyone else? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Congrats!!! There were not really any mac configurations on my test either and really knew them well. Since I did not get a 450 or 500 I guess I am in the “room for improvement” group

Congrats Duncan, I took mine today also and passed as well. I picked Friday the 13th for luck (and had to wait a week to get the free retry voucher code). Thanks for all your postings, I used some notes from some of your articles in my study guide based on tbe blueprint.

Overall I thought the test was fair, a couple of questions I thought were not since you could use the client to calculate the answer for my last question, but I did like how they seemed to be alot more applied types of questions and situational based rather than “What is the maximum # of ____” questions. Also a lot of questions with multiple answers.

Steve, there’s a bit more to my observation that you aren’t privvy to. Don’t feel bad. A pass is a pass! ๐Ÿ™‚

congrats on passing – yet don’t you think the value of your VCP4 is dimished by the relative little effort of memorizing maximum limits with the help of a crib list? – for me this is what is wrong with vmware’s certification tests – and I am a VCP – I know a vmware trainer and he acknowledges they need to reform this to bring greater credibility to the standard.

I actually passed about a month ago. I had very few configuration maximums on my test. I did, however, study them and the other pdf files.

    Congrats Duncan,

Looks like I passed at the same day as you did…!!! Friday the 13th.. While on my trip to South Africa… and right after my VMware Class here.

I had about 10 questions on Configuration maximums. Then various questions, some dead easy and some really obscure…. But in general I knew the answer. Even if you can’t really see which questions were wrong and which ok. Definitely the Friday 13 was my very lucky day, because I did a good score.

I still feel like sitting in the clouds…-:) Really happy with that. I also did a blog post how this happend to me.

I felt the pressure before the exam more intensive than before a Microsoft exam. Maybe because the area of knowledge is much wider then on Microsoft’s exam. That’s why I’m really happy with that.

Congrats Duncan! I took it on the Monday of VMworld. I had it scheduled before I found out I was defending my design for VCDX.

Right after defending my design, I sleepily walked over to the Mariott and took the exam without even studying. Since I made a priority out of the VCDX, I fully expected to fail. I figured that I would use it as a study exercise: get the failing score report and study what it indicated I need to. Surprisingly, I passed. Only a 380, but a win is a win! I guess the hands on with the beta was beneficial.

    Nice work, Duncan!

I took mine at VMworld. Melissa convinced me to ‘just do it’ after she gave me my VCDX results. I asked if they’d take my DX away if I failed the VCP4 exam and didn’t get a straight answer… fortunately, it all worked out. ๐Ÿ˜€
