RE: VMware vCenter 4 minimum RAM requirement, is it 2GB or 3GB?

Duncan Epping · Sep 14, 2009 ·

Simon Long just posted a new article which is titled; VMware vCenter 4 minimum RAM requirement, is it 2GB or 3GB? Simon found two answers(2GB vs 3GB) in three documents which are listed below:

  1. VMware’s ESX and vCenter Server Installation Guide
  2. Scott Lowe’s – Mastering VMware vSphere 4.0
  3. VMware Education – VMware vSphere 4 Install, Configure, and Manage course books

Now for me the answer is simple. Anything that’s stated in an official VMware document is leading so that would rule out Scott. So what about the course material vs the install guide cause both are VMware documents. Course material usually doesn’t get updated as often as it should. Don’t use course material for specific limits or requirements. Use the official product documentation. Course material should be used to understand the concepts, for specifics use the documentation!

All vSphere documentation can be found here: http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/vs_pages/vsp_pubs_esx40_vc40.html

These docs should be leading at all times!

Thanks for the comments Duncan. I will leave my exam as it then.
I always use the VMware documentation when i create my exam questions, so hopefully they should all be correct.

    Well,
I just installed a vCenter in a VM today… with 3Gigs of RAM. If I’m wrong I can easily adjust the RAM for that VM… -:)

It’s great to have a vCenter in a VM .. and being protected by H.A.

I agree that the VMware documentation set should always be considered “canon”, especially for things like exams and suppport. However, it is important to question discrepancies, as the documentation can be wrong or outdated.
If you are ever unsure, go back and check the latest release of the document. If there is still something that you think is incorrect, send a quick email to docfeedback@vmware.com

    From the VMware install doc
    * Memory – 3GB RAM. Memory requirements might be higher if the database runs on the same machine.

    Might be higher!

Same works for the 2 CPU’s requirement for vCenter in the installation manual; however, the VMware vSphere 4 Install, Configure, and Manage course book only mention 1 CPU requirement.
This 2 CPU’s requirement have a huge impact in the way I protect my vCenter from a potential failing host; what I want to say is, if 1 CPU was supported, I could be using Fault Tolerance for my vCenter VM…

For the exam I beleive both answers are correct because it depends on the question

My understanding is for the exam is:
    recommended minimum 3gb
    minimum 2gb.

I made the above assumptions after doing the VMware Mylearn mock exams 20 times
