vSphere, finally available…

Duncan Epping · May 21, 2009 ·

When ESX 3.0 was released people were excited about it but it can’t be compared to the buzz that has been created around vSphere. It’s all over the blogosphere, I think every single blog out there published articles  about vSphere weeks even months before it was released . Now the time has finally come, it’s available! Go to the download section of the VMware website to download it.

Equally important is the update documentation section. Be sure to download all the documents and start reading!

Have fun today guys, while we in the Netherlands enjoy our holiday.

I think we killed VMware’s site. I’m trying to download it at a customer’s site and I’m getting this:

The page you’re looking for can’t be found.

Enter a word or phrase in the Search box in the upper right, or try one of the links below.

Actually, if you go through the evaluation process here: https://www.vmware.com/tryvmware/index.php?p=vsphere&lp=1 , the download will work just peachy.

Is it true the esx 4 only works with 64bit?

Boot your server with this DVD in order to install ESX 4.0. NOTE: VMware ESX 4.0 and ESXi 4.0 require 64-bit capable servers for installation and execution.

Yes, you require a machine capable of running 64bit instructions to run vSphere. It will not be able to install on a 32bit-only machine. But one of those hybrid 32/64bit CPU’s that most of us have will do just fine 🙂

    Hi Duncan,

is there any roadmap/timeframe when “Linked Clones” (like in VMWare Workstation) will be available in ESX (GUI-configurable and officially supported)? I miss this feature (in my opinion an important feature) and unfortunately it isn’t in the GA release.

bjger, you could consider using storage level cloning (EG: Flexclones) or use Lab Manager. We make heavy use of both at my current customer site
