Logitech Brio Webcam issues with autofocus and not retaining settings on Mac OSX

I have been using a Logitech Brio Webcam for the past year or so. It is a 4k Webcam which is very useful for webinars and meetings, especially as I run my Macbook with an external monitor and it is closed. Over the past 9 months or so I had a bunch of trouble with the Logitech Brio Webcam. This week I received a new Macbook and I had to reinstall all components, and immediately after I installed the Logitech software, all issues started popping up again. Auto Focus was just not working as expected, wide/standard view settings were not properly retained, and neither was the angle/width. I made sure I had the latest version of the software, the latest version of the firmware, but that didn’t solve any of the problems. Actually, it made things worse as now I had the camera randomly stopping as well, even had my Mac log me off randomly when using the camera. I solved all these issues by uninstalling ALL Logitech software. Yes, you read that correctly, I uninstalled all Logitech software and the Brio was usable again.

Unfortunately, this means that you can’t configure the Brio as you would wish, and it runs with the optimal/default settings, but at least it works. I was told that the Logitech G Hub software could potentially be a nice alternative. But after reading this thread on Reddit I decided I am going to skip that as well, as I don’t get a real comfortable feeling when reading all the comments. Unfortunately, I don’t have a way to configure the webcam right now, if I find a solution to this problem I will make sure to update this post. You may ask, what would you need to configure? Well in my case I would like to configure the Webcam to use PAL instead of NTSC for the refresh rate, which removes some of the flickering I would be able to spot other wise. Unfortunately, not possible just yet without the software to my knowledge, or maybe one of you knows the answer to this problem? To conclude, I think it is fair to say that the Logitech hardware is great, but unfortunately, the software is not.

    Same situation here: Mac + Catalina + Brio Logitech Webcam. Always flicking, no saving of configuration.

        Hi,
        I’ve submitted a ticket to Logitech about “Camera Settings” that do not memorize configuration. This is the answer from support:
        “What you describe is normal, because Camera Settings Software does not have the ability to save settings. All customizations will work only until the software is open or running on background. You can then use the steps I provided you in my last email. ”

            I installed the LogiTune app and it seems to keep the settings.
            Also the crashing problems gone completely once I connected directly to the mac.

    Occasionally I have autofocus issues with my Brio on Windows 10 too. As a workaround I usually switch to manual focus (Logitech camera settings). The camera’s depth of field is good enough to handle a fair range of sharpness. I’ve used the camera a lot over the last 8 months for long video calls and teachings. Luckily I haven’t experienced anything worse than out of focus issues. Allthough your experience was on a different OS, I will now be cautious with Logitech software updates. 🙁

      I’ve seen people reporting issues with Windows also, if it works, I would not update/upgrade!

    Same issue here, in my case is a bit more extreme, since it even randomly crashes my Mac. Not sure if you tested already to connect the camera directly to one of the MacBook ports with a direct USB-C cable, in case you are connecting it through a dock/hub? I have that setup at the moment and it did not crash yet or image stopped, for the last couple of days when going in and out of zoom or team calls. but still early days. this was a tip from the Logitech forum when I tried to troubleshoot the issue a couple of weeks/months ago.

      I had crashes last year as well when connected to a HUB, I removed the hub for that reason and moved to USB-C for my macbook pro. But even then I had the occasional random “log off”. No full crashes anymore since then though, but still plenty of issues.

        Yeah, I was thinking that probably you already done it. At the moment I have the camera control app installed and when the image freezes it seems to unfreeze when I start the app, but I honestly never tried uninstalling completely the app.

    I’ve had similar issues with a Logitech C920 webcam on a 2018 Mac Mini after I upgraded to Big Sur. What worked for me is an app called “Webcam Settings” in the App Store. It has a rainbow camera logo. Reviews are mixed so YMMV but it allowed me to control my webcam settings again.

    Look into the app “Webcam Settings” in the app store. It lets you configure the camera using profiles and can probably do what you need.

    I have used a Logitech 920, 922 for years without problem. A couple of years ago I bought a BRIO.
    I was not happy:
    1. the stand/foot arrangement is pants. Why did they not keep the same arrangement as on the C920/930 which was immediately compatible with any standard tripod and still allowed you to tilt and adjust the webcam?
    2. The logitech software is now awful, even with skype.
    I returned the brio for refund.

    I visit quite a few “webcam models” online. I can always determine quickly who is using a 920/922/930 and who is using a BRIO. I make my guess and the girls confirm, I have never been wrong. The brio regularly goes out of focus and it not obviously focussed on anything in the room. Sometimes it is badly out of focus and the girl can see it in her small p-in-p. But sometimes it is more subtle and the image is all just lacking crisp sharpness. In both cases the immediate fix used by the girls is to place a hand close to the Brio, until it refocusses, OR immediately point it down as the keyboard until it refocusses. then it can be returned to the room view and all is OK. BUT it usually loses focus every 15 minutes or so, sometimes more frequently, and never for any discernable reason.

      For the price, and following on from how many years of experience Logitech have with webcams, the Brio ought to be an embarrassment to them, and they ought to have improved it by now.
