vSphere 4.1 released

Duncan Epping · Jul 13, 2010 ·

I just wanted to let you know that vSphere 4.1 has been released and is available to download. No point in me rehashing the same “what’s new” info everyone is rehashing today and probably the rest of the week. Expect some more detailed blogs coming up over the course of the upcoming weeks.

One thing not mentioned in the “what’s new” document is that vCenter is now only supported on x64! Big surprise!

Yah, the x64 thing caught me by surprise as it isn’t really stated explicitly anywhere. Glad I’d already migrated to 2008 x64 before though.

    Hello,

does anyone knows how to enter tech console on ESXi? After upgrade to 4.1 when I try to acces console I’m getting info “Tech support mode has been disabled by the administrator”

    Thanks

I’ve found it. It is in ESXi configuration options in Troubleshooting Mode Options. It looks like there is also SSH enabling option.

I’m not seeing it in update manager yet unfortunately. I guess I got spoiled by those previous releases! The update for the 4.1 vMA appliance is out though if anyone cares.

    Anyone noticed this?

“vSphere 4.1 and its subsequent update and patch releases are the last releases to include both ESX and ESXi hypervisor architectures. Future major releases of VMware vSphere will include only the VMware ESXi architecture. For this reason, VMware recommends that deployments of vSphere 4.x utilize the ESXi hypervisor architecture.”

Sweet, and thanks for the update. Now I can start planning for the upgrade this fall.

    Great blog by the way.
