Update on Kodiak

Duncan Epping · Sep 4, 2008 ·

So I blogged about Kodiak a couple of days, and just received some new information. Let’s start of with the facts that weren’t clear in the first blog:

  1. Kodiak is not open-source at this time. (We’re working on that)
We will be releasing an easy to use Open-SDK, and hope to eventually open up the entire code-base.
  2. Kodiak is 100% free for personal use.
  3. All systems purchased from bluebear include an unlimited use, enterprise license (and early code access).

Now, there’s already a discussion going on what “personal use” means.

But much more exciting in my opinion is the rumor that they’re polishing off a new feature – the
ability to manage multiple Virtual Center instances simultaneously and independently (as opposed to only ESX hosts at the moment)!!!

BlueBear will be opening the beta program to new registrants tomorrow, so better be quick! They will also be at VMworld in a few weeks (booth NI 10). And launch their latest product, for the enterprise; Grizzly!
In addition, all VMworld 2008 attendees will be given invites to Kodiak’s private beta!

  • Bug fix: It was not possible to permanently select English language, when default system language was different (and that language for WinSCP was installed).
  • Bug fix: It was not possible to move files by drag&drop to other applications when using drag&drop shell extension. 261

Cool tool

Duncan Epping · Jul 12, 2008 ·

I was just searching for a way to clone my laptop just in case disaster strikes. I found a cool tool called Clonezilla. It’s free, open source and very easy to use. You can burn a “live cd” or even copy the tool to a USB memory stick and just boot from it.

It supports a whole bunch of file systems: ext2, ext3, reiserfs, xfs, jfs of GNU/Linux, and FAT, NTFS of MS Windows! Check it out.

Scripted install

Duncan Epping · Jun 27, 2008 ·

A while back I wrote a scripted install aka “cfg” file, and I just noticed I never published it. Check it out, it might be useful in one way or another. It also available for download here!

Especially changing the amount of active nics in a team can be useful(I’ve commented this out again, as of ESX 3.5 U3 this isn’t necessary anymore. Enabling vmotion via the vimsh command is still valid. [Read more…] about Scripted install
