I just received the following announcement and thought it would be interesting for you as well:

HyTrust, Inc., the leader in policy management and access control for virtual infrastructure, announced today that it has secured $10.5 million in Series B financing. New investors Granite Ventures and Cisco Systems participated in the round of financing, as did existing investors Trident Capital and Epic Ventures. Len Rand, partner at Granite Ventures, will take a seat on the HyTrust Board of Directors. HyTrust will use the capital to drive development, sales and marketing, and fuel the company’s next stage of growth.

“We are excited to welcome Cisco not only as a HyTrust partner but now also as a strategic investor,” added Chiu. “It’s great validation for HyTrust when the worldwide leader in networking places its confidence, via financial backing, in our approach to policy management and access control for virtual infrastructure. We look forward to deepening our relationship with the Server Access & Virtualization business unit at Cisco, tightening our existing integration with Cisco Nexus 1000v and Unified Computing System products, and working closely with Cisco’s Security business unit to address the needs of our joint customers. We feel strongly that policy management is key to enabling the ‘next generation data center’ and we couldn’t be more excited to have gained the backing of the company that coined the phrase.”

Just noticed this press release from Hyper9. Congrats on making this list…

AUSTIN, Texas – Jan. 20, 2010 – Despite a tough economy and increased competition in the virtualization market, Hyper9, Inc. today announced the close of a banner year in 2009, capped off by a fourth quarter that was the company’s strongest quarter to-date. Demonstrating positive momentum across all areas of the business, Hyper9 won numerous industry accolades in 2009, most recently landing on CIO.com’s third-annual list of intriguing innovators in virtualization management, 10 Virtualization Vendors to Watch in 2010.

“Virtualization is no longer a buzzword that people just talk about,” said Bill Kennedy, CEO of Hyper9. “In 2009, more enterprises embraced virtualization as an effective way to optimize IT operations. As organizations continue to face the challenge of doing more with less, virtualization will play a strategic role in enhancing the performance and agility of key business initiatives.”

The VMware Developer Communities have been overhauled and in such a way that Chip Foose would be proud. Another new feature I like is the “Hero Spotlight” section which currently features William Lam, Hal Rottenberg, Mike Giles and Luc Dekens. Just visit this new section of the community forums.

Months ago I shared an idea on Twitter about starting a “super blog”. This “super blog” should have contained the top articles of some of the best VMware or virtualization bloggers around. I asked myself what the added value would be and came to the conclusion that there already were many “super blogs” around. Although the “super blog” idea died a slow death the urge to collaborate with others on a challenging project still lived on. (Although Stephen Foskett picked it up and created Gestalt IT at the time.)

This is when the idea of a book series was born, which I for obvious reasons did not share with the twitter community. This book, and hopefully the rest of the following books, is written by six well known VMware community members. I don’t think they need further introduction so here are there names: Bernie Baker(thanks Chad for the tip), Thomas Bryant III, Stu Radnidge, Dave Mishchenko, Alan Renouf and myself of course.

The original idea was to publish a series of short topics, deep-dives, with each book limited to 150 pages, pocket size, sold at a minimum price and completely “diy”. For those unfamiliar with the term “diy” it means “do it yourself”. In other words we do not have a publisher helping us or funding it. We also don’t have a marketing budget, so we are relying on you guys to spread the word and we will be relying on Lulu.com for distributing/selling it.

When we started outlining our first book Ron Oglesby gave us the opportunity to rewrite the Quick Start Guide he and his team at RapidApp published in March 2007. We all agreed that this would be a good start of the series. Thanks again Ron! Of course this book will exceed the limit we agreed on of 150 pages, but it is worth it. We hope to get it done before VMworld and bring a couple of copies to VMworld but the clock is ticking fast and we are not there yet. We will keep you informed!

I just hope we can get all you guys as excited about new technology and VMware products in general as we are!

The rumors were already floating around in the blogosphere but as a VMware employee I could not comment on it. The word is finally out…

Source
We are pleased to announce that VMworld Europe will be held in October 2010. The VMworld Europe conference will follow our Global VMworld conference, scheduled for San Francisco in September 2010, to ensure that we are able to roll out key initiatives to customers and partners more quickly and consistently worldwide. As the leading virtualization conference, VMworld will continue to offer its diverse global audience the latest information on how virtualization is revolutionizing the next generation of computing.

More information on the specific dates and location for VMworld Europe 2010 will be announced soon!

You’ve probably already read the comments of the bloggers on this decision and if not you might want to read these articles:

Gabes Virtual World

PlanetVM

RTFM Education

Personally I don’t know what the reason is for moving the conference to October instead of February. Of course I share some of the concerns mentioned in the blog articles above. I personally hope a new location will be chosen. Cannes was a nice location the last two editions but my guess is that Milan, Madrid, Barcelona and even Nice would be more appealing to most European attendees. (Definitely cheaper!) I guess we will just have to wait and see what the VMworld Europe team comes up with.

One thing that everyone who is attending VMworld is always curious about is the VMworld party. On twitter a couple of hours ago @vmworld revealed that the party will be held at Yerba Buena Gardens. Unfortunately they have not revealed yet who the legendary US/British rock band is that supposedly has been booked. We will just have to wait and see I guess…

Another thing I’m personally excited about is the Golden Gate Bridge Run. This is an initiative that also started on twitter. As some of us will be bringing our running shoes we decided to do a daily run. Another idea we had was to do the Golden Gate Bridge. If you are interested in joining head over to this blog post and leave a comment if you want to tag along. We might be getting every attendee a t-shirt, and are also looking in to getting this sponsored and donating to charity. Cool huh!

I was just watching the Drummonds vs Crosby debate. Many people have analyzed the videos already but the one worth reading is the article by Mr Stevie Chambers. If you haven’t seen it yet, take a look it’s definitely worth it. One thing I would like to note is that in my opinion this was the wrong match. I don’t think Crosby is a performance expert. He seems to be more focused on: sales pitch, eula’s and features included in the hypervisor but not in Xenserver. In other words, Drummonds definitely won… knock out in the third round by EPT

Now, my comment to Citrix… As Scott openly challenged you guys to show benchmark reports(Spec etc) and compare them to VMware’s reports please step up to the plate! That’s what ours and your customers would like to see!
