Last week at VMworld and on the VMTN community I had a couple of questions around resource management and HA Admission Control. It appears people were using HA Admission Control for managing resources within their environment. In other words, the amount of VMs that HA would allow you to restart would be leading for managing resources. But is that what you should do?

If you look at how HA works and what HA is intended to do the answer in short is, No. Now the reason for this is that HA is all about getting your virtual machines up and running again. If you look at HA Admission Control in vSphere 5.0 you will quickly see that for instance the default value for CPU has been decreased from 256MHz to 32MHz, if no CPU reservations are specified that is. Now in many scenarios virtual machines will consume and demand more than that. Another thing to point out is that if no memory reservation is specified the memory overhead of the VM is used. These values are more than likely much lower than what your virtual machine currently consumes or demands. The thing to keep in mind is that these CPU and Memory values only represent what HA needs in order to power-on your virtual machines.

If you want to manage resources, avoid severe overcommitment, guarantee a certain experience you should start looking at the DRS statistics. You should start exploring tools like VC Ops, Cap IQ… Don’t (ab)use vSphere HA for this. It is not designed to solve this problem. One thing to think about though is maybe increasing the minimum value for slotsizes to avoid scenarios where environments are fully overloaded!? If you have a consolidation ratio in mind it should be fairly simple to figure out which value to use:

available memory esource per host / consolidation ratio = das.vmMemoryMinMB
or
available CPU esource per host / consolidation ratio = das.vmCpuMinMHz

I am not saying that you should do this, but I think it might not be a bad practice in environments where multiple people have access to vCenter and can deploy VMs. At least people will be triggered when you are running out of “slots” to start VMs.

A couple of weeks ago I was contacted about an issue with vSphere 5.0. When a VM Storage Profile was disabled / enabled it looked like HA and DRS got disabled as well. After diving in to the problem it appeared that both HA and DRS were still working. It seems that some how the vSphere Client thinks it is disabled. Again, although it looks like it is disabled it is still fully functioning… but indeed it is very confusing. A simple work around would be enabling HA/DRS. This problem has just been published in our Knowledge Base, and hopefully will be addressed soon.

I was reading a whitepaper by VKernel and it mentioned the following “a failover host for these VMs requires sufficient idle resources“. In this whitepaper it is discussed how Monster VMs pose challenges for both HA and DRS. As I had a similar question last week at VMworld I figured I would post this. Also because it is fundamental to understand this with regards to HA. Now the thing is, I agree that there is no point in creating large VMs just because you can. Without a doubt do Monster VMs pose challenges with regards to managing resources. However I do want to point out that technically speaking the statement is incorrect.

To power-on a VM you need unreserved memory capacity! The unreserved memory capacity needs to be equal to the memory reservation of the VM and the memory overhead! In other words, if you set no memory reservation you can power-on multiple 96GB VMs on a 48GB host. Just because the memory overhead is much lower than 48GB of memory. Now this doesn’t mean it is a best practice, or this is something I would recommend, but it does mean that if you look at how HA handles a fail-overs it will accommodate the restart of these virtual machine. This also means that with regards to HA Admission Control, chances of not being able to power-on your virtual machine because of insufficient resources are fairly slim. I bet that if you over-commit to such an extent that a power-on operation is impossible you have a lot more challenges to begin with!

Frank Denneman wrote a nice article about this a while back, it explains perfectly what the impact is of a memory reservation.

On twitter Mike Laverick asked a question around DRS Affinity Rules and if HA would respect these. In this particular instance the question was around VM-Host affinity rules and I noticed multiple tweeps responding and figured it would not hut to repeat this.

There are two different types of VM-Host affinity rules:

Must aka mandatory

Should aka preferential

The difference between these two with regards to HA is that HA will always respect a must rule. These are mandatory, even if that results in downtime for the VM. The should rule is also known as the preferential rule. In others words it would be nice if this rule can be respected, but if it can’t… no harm.

How does HA know which VM belongs to which host with regards to DRS rules? Well that is fairly straight forward. HA keeps track of which VM is compatible with which hosts. This “VM to Host compatibility list” is used for portgroups and datastores but also for DRS rules. Check the screenshot below for a hint…

After months of hard work the moment is finally there, the release of our new book: vSphere 5.0 Clustering Technical Deepdive! When we started working, or better said, planning an update of the book we never realized the amount of work required. Be aware that this is not a minor update. This book covers HA (full rewrite as HA has been rewritten for 5.0), DRS (mostly rewritten to focus on resource management) and Storage DRS (new!). Besides these three major pillars we also decided to add what we call supporting deepdives. The supporting deepdives added are: vMotion, Storage vMotion, Storage I/O Control and EVC. This resulted in roughly 50% more content (totaling 348 pages) than the previous book, also worth noting that every single diagram has been recreated and are they cool or what?

Before I will give you the full details I want to thanks a couple of people who have helped us tremendously and without whom this publication would not have been possible. First of all I would like to thank my co-author Frank “Mr Visio” Denneman for all his hard work. Frank and I would also like to thank our VMware management team for supporting us on this project. Doug “VEEAM” Hazelman thanks for writing the foreword! A special thanks goes out to our technical reviewers and editors: Doug Baer, Keith Farkas and Elisha Ziskind (HA Engineering), Anne Holler, Irfan Ahmad and Rajesekar Shanmugam (DRS and SDRS Engineering), Puneet Zaroo (VMkernel scheduling), Ali Mashtizadeh and Gabriel Tarasuk-Levin (vMotion and Storage vMotion Engineering), Doug Fawley and Divya Ranganathan (EVC Engineering). Thanks for keeping us honest and contributing to this book.

As promised in the multiple discussions we had around our 4.1 HA/DRS book we wanted to make sure to offer multiple options straight away. While Frank finalized the printed copy I worked on formatting the ebook. Besides the black&white printed version we are also offering a full color version of the book and a Kindle version. The black&white sells for $ 29.95, the full color for $ 49.95 and the Kindle for an ultra cheap price: $ 9.95. Needless to say that we recommend the Kindle version. It is cheap, full color and portable or should we say virtual… who doesn’t love virtual? On a sidenote, we weren’t planning on doing a black and white release but due to the extremely high production costs of the full color print we decided to offer it as an extra service. Before I give the full description here are the direct links to where you can buy the book. (Please note that Amazon hasn’t listed our book yet, seems like an indexing issue, should be resolved soon hopefully For those who cannot wait to order the printed copy check-out Createspace or Comcol.

VMware vSphere 5.0 Clustering Technical Deepdive zooms in on three key components of every VMware based infrastructure and is by no means a “how to” guide. It covers the basic steps needed to create a vSphere HA and DRS cluster and to implement Storage DRS. Even more important, it explains the concepts and mechanisms behind HA, DRS and Storage DRS which will enable you to make well educated decisions. This book will take you in to the trenches of HA, DRS and Storage DRS and will give you the tools to understand and implement e.g. HA admission control policies, DRS resource pools, Datastore Clusters and resource allocation settings. On top of that each section contains basic design principles that can be used for designing, implementing or improving VMware infrastructures and fundamental supporting features like vMotion, Storage I/O Control and much more are described in detail for the very first time.

This book is also the ultimate guide to be prepared for any HA, DRS or Storage DRS related question or case study that might be presented during VMware VCDX, VCP and or VCAP exams.

Coverage includes:
- HA node types
- HA isolation detection and response
- HA admission control
- VM Monitoring
- HA and DRS integration
- DRS imbalance algorithm
- Resource Pools
- Impact of reservations and limits
- CPU Resource Scheduling
- Memory Scheduler
- DPM
- Datastore Clusters
- Storage DRS algorithm
- Influencing SDRS recommendations

Be prepared to dive deep!

A couple of weeks ago Alan Renouf contacted me and asked me if it was okay to turn some of our best practices mentioned in the book into PowerCLI code. I thought about it for 0.00001 seconds and yelled: hell yeah! Alan worked on it for a couple of days over the last couple of weeks and this is the result. Alan hasn’t been able to get the full book into his audit script, but knowing Alan he will get their in a couple of weeks (no pressure). Not only does the outcome of the audit script look really cool, it is also very useful. I will be working with Alan on refining and enhancing it over the next couple of weeks so check Alan’s website on a regular basis for updates. Once again, Alan great work…

As Mr Sloof already revealed VMworld Public Voting started today… I have submitted multiple sessions, some which are directly job related and others which are more community focused. As I was part of the voting committee for the Technology and Architecture track I know how many great sessions were submitted and how difficult it will be to get your session approved. (almost 400 submissions for that track alone and less than 40 slots) There are two particular sessions which I will need YOUR help with and I hope you guys are willing to vote on these. These are not the typical powerpoint slide sessions, yes you can get a lot out of those but after seeing slide 8326th of the day you tend to get a bit bored. This is your chance to change VMworld and vote for something different:

TA 1956 – The ESXi Quiz Show
Join us for our very first ESXi Quiz Show where teams of vExperts and VMware engineers will match expertise on technical facts, trivia related to all VMware ESXi and related products. You as the audience will get 40% of the vote. We will cover topics around ESXi migration, storage, networking security, and VMware products. As an attendee of this session you will get to see the experts battle each other. For the very first time at VMworld you get to decide who leaves the stage as a winner and who does not.

TA 1682 – vSphere Clustering Q&A
Frank Denneman and Duncan Epping will answer any question with regards to vSphere Clustering in this session. You as the audience will have the chance to validate your own environment and design decisions with the Subject Matter Experts on HA, DRS and Storage DRS. Topics could include for instance misunderstandings around Admission Control Policies, the impact of limits and reservations on your environment, the benefits of using Resource Pools, Anti-Affinity Rules Gotchas, DPM and of course anything regarding Storage DRS. This is your chance to ask what you’ve always wanted to know!

http://www.vmworld.com/cfp.jspa

The vSphere Clustering Q&A is obvious I guess. Frank and I did this session at the Dutch VMUG and the place was packed and it a cool very informative session with many great questions some which literally had our heads spinning.

The Quiz Show is kind of my baby. I came up with the Quiz Show before VMworld 2010 but as I was working on the VMworld Labs it slipped my mind and I was too late to enter it in to the system. This year however I contacted my friends Pablo Roesch and John Troyer and we had a couple of conference calls about this one… I promise you, if we can pull this one off it is going to R O C K. vExperts battling VMware employees on virtualization knowledge! Just imagine who could reach the finals, who could get eliminated during the pre-rounds… Wouldn’t it be cool if Chad Sakac and Vaughn Stewart make it in to the finals, or how could would it be when Eric Sloof gets eliminated during the pre-qualifying rounds? Yes, it is going to be EPIC, the battle of the year…

There’s another community session, and this not only has multiple top bloggers but also 4 VCDX’s : TA 1425 Ask the Expert vBloggers (Chad Sakac, Scott Lowe, Rick Scherer, Frank Denneman and I). Vote!
