I don’t know what has happened. Yesterday evening everything was fine, I just woke up and had the following email in my mailbox:
Your account has been suspended due to a violation of our Terms of Service.
- Account suspended: depping
- Date of violation: July 29, 2009
- Minimum suspension period: 1 week
Your account was suspended for cross-posting duplicate tweets across multiple accounts, a violation of our terms of service and the Twitter Rules that we take very seriously. Your account will remain suspended for a minimum of one week; you may petition for reinstatement on or after August 5, 2009.
Funny things is that I don’t have multiple accounts and I was sleeping when this happened. Anyway I will probably not be tweeting the next week or so. I’m just not sure if I should just open up a new account or ask for my current account to be reinstated…

You can contest the suspension. http://help.twitter.com/forums/26257/entries/15790
I wonder what triggered it…
Duncan says
I also wonder what triggered it. I already opened a helpdesk ticket but it will take at least 7 days… at least.

If it helps, exactly the same thing happened to me for no apparent reason.

Same thing happened to me tonight. Have no idea what so ever why it happened. I do retweet my tweets to facebook but not to any other twitter account. I was hacked the other day for a few hours and they managed to send away two or three commercial tweets which I promptly removed when I changed my password. Feels very strange to be suspended when you have done nothing wrong.

Same thing happened to me. Contested it, got an automated mail, responded to that.
I’ve done nothing wrong either but I did get hacked a few days backed but removed the two or three spam messages that were sent out and changed my password.
We aren’t alone in this but it seems it happened yesterday for the first time. Failing spam alerter?
Good luck to you.

Maybe the problem is Planet V12n and its aggregation of your blog-posts? they are twittered, too.
Simon Long says
Hi Duncan, i’ve just had the same happen to my account. I’ve opened a ticket, i’ll let you know if i hear of anything.
I’m not part of Planet v12n yet! [John.. :-)] So i don’t think it could be to do with that.

Aaaah, I was already wondering why i didn’t see a “good morning” this morning!

Twitter is impacting your sponsors. I smell a lawsuit π

I KNEW you were just a spam bot, I just thought it was the most highly sophisticated one VMware had ever written π

I was wondering why the twittervese seemed so quite today. And now I know why…. I hope that this is sorted out sooner rather than later.
Duncan says
I think it was because Simon was hacked and I retweeted a spam tweet to warn him. Never do that again.
I seemed to have lost all my followers though, I can already login by the way.

Duncan –
When try to look you up, it says your account is suspended. Maybe when it REALLY comes back, you will have all of your followers.

Erik Bussink says
Duncan, see what happens when you don’t tweet… you’re website’s stats go true the roof… 7 days will be long…

Better to have (and fix) this mistake now than during VMWorld.
VM Vic says
hmm… maybe twitter runs on physical servers and have virtual envy π

can you tell me what came of this suspended account as mine just had this done to it.. I suspected that my account may have been compromised but was not certain then this morning when I wake up I receive a email that I am suspended for the same reason. I also put in a ticket to investigate. thnx

My account was also suspended on 7/30. Same scenario. I went to bed on 7/29, woke up the morning of 7/30 and noticed 2 tweets that I didn’t post that were spam. I deleted the tweets and changed my password. Later that day I got the email regarding the suspension. I opened 2 tickets with Twitter and all I got was automated responses. Tomorrow will be 2 weeks since the suspension and it still has not been lifted. It’s really frustrating to get suspended when I did nothing wrong and the fact that you can’t contact a real person to get it resolved.
If anyone had their suspension lifted, please post here and let me know how long it took.
Thanks!

This has happened to me as well. On the exact day! I still haven’t had my account reactivated.
That alone is frustrating, but what is more frustrating is that Twitter has said nothing about this at all and TONS of people have been hit by this. This would have been huge news, but the DoS attack swept this under a rug…

how long after your account was suspended did you get it back?
