Bouke -- we hope to talk about VMFS optimizations, motivation and results at VMworld. This is not set in stone, but if time and legal restrictions permit, I'd like to do a refresh to my VMworld 2005 PAC267-C material.

Bouke - we finished our VMware/EMC QTR (quarterly technology review) last week, looking out to 2010 and 2011. Oh, oh, how I wish I could tell :-)

There's that, and so much more :-)

Satyam stated something in the end of his reply: "I can tell you about things like non-blocking retries, optimistic IO (not optimistic locking) and tons of other things that we have done under the covers to make sure reservations and thin provisioning don’t belong in the same sentence with vSphere 4."

Yeah, please tell us!!!

WOW! Excellent info, Duncan! The last post convinced me to change future designs to 8MB Block size. This just adds to the reasons. A big convenience factor will almost always trump a tiny performance factor.
