I think by now most of you have read Mike D’s scoop on the “VMware View Open Client“. If not here’s a outtake from the press release:
VMware View Open Client is available under the GNU Lesser General Public License version 2.1 (LGPL v 2.1) and is accessible from http://code.google.com/p/vmware-view-open-client/. Some of the features included in this release support secure tunneling using SSL, two factor authentication with RSA SecurID, Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Thin Client Add-On RPM package and a full command line interface. Support for the source code distribution is available through the VMware View Open Client community at: http://code.google.com/p/vmware-view-open-client/.
I’ve just downloaded the PRM and installed it on OpenSuse 11.1 without a problem:
Now I would need to request a virtual desktop so I can actually use the client. 🙂

I’tried to connect a virtual desktop using ip address but still stuck on this error ” Could not connect to broker”

Hi, test with http://servername.domaine.com

Same problem over here..
Name resolution is fine. But the error keeps popping up.
Duncan says
Which Distro are you using? I’ve been using Suse 11.1 with gnome and it works like a charm!
Mike says
Hmm, I read in the Administration Manual that you cannot have Vmware ACe, Player, Server or Workstation installed. And guess what. I have Workstation installed. So maybe that’s the problem.
Duncan says
I’ve also got VMware workstation installed 6.5.1. Still seems to work without any problems so far…
Mike says
I tested it again.. and guess what. I works.
The problem is that I don’t know what fixed it.
I did some testing with Policies and with the client for windows.
Mike says
Is it rights that on the opensource client there is no support for shameless printing and USB?

This highlights one of my on-going beefs with VMware:
“VMware View Open Client lets you connect from a Linux or Mac OS X desktop to remote Windows desktops managed by VMware View.”
It’s not at all clear what VMware View is or why anyone would want to connect to a Windows desktop managed by it. Time and time again, their announcements are buzz-word compliant and information deficient…
Joe says
What we need is a way to use Linux to replace Windows for VDI deployments, so we need the agent so we can publish Linux desktops to any device running the view client. We want to ditch windows for some users…. Imagine that!
